DTC keep going off whilst driving after Tyre change
Hello guys hopefully you can help me with this one..
So i have changed my tyres on my X1 xdrive 2.3D yesterday from runflats to normal ones as i prefer the ride. As soon as i got them changed when i left the garage the DTC (A with an arrow going arround it) started to come up and blink on the dash when i put my foot down or do anywhere around 30mph or above. When i press the DTC button it stops doing it but obviously i dont want to be pressing the button every time i need to go somewhere. I went from 225/45/r18 on the front to 225/40/r18 and back i kept to the same 255/40/r18. The garage is claiming that its because they are non run flats and the size difference throws the sensors off and makes the car think its spinning the wheels which is obviously not the case, their suggestion is to save up and go back to what it was size wise and runflat to fix it. Is there any other way to get past this as i dont wanna fork out again buncha money when its not needed. Thanks for any help! |

Your tyre diameter difference for front/rear is 3.6%, that's way too big difference for xDrive. If you don't change it then you might end up with a broken differential.
Switch front to 225/45 and keep 255/40. or keep front 225/40 and change rear to 255/35. Good luck. |

Yes, this could absolutely be the cause of this and it would likely stop with the correct size tires.

I also would not wait to save up money. You put the wrong size tires on it and need to get this resolved ASAP or you are looking at a much larger expense.

I certainly wouldn't ever go back there. Even a repair shop that sells tires should know to check diameters. Seems like they are pretty much clueless

They specialise in tyre,MOT etc, but tyres are one of the main things they do.., a company that actually has over 25 braches in UK.. As im not an expert or know much about cars i when i asked and they didnt say anything i assumed it will be fine, they mentioned that these cars prefer run flats and its better to stick with them but thats it. When i went back they had no idea what it could be, told them to take it for test drive which they did and they came back still not 100% sure about whats causing the issue but said more then likely its because its not RFT, and better off saving up and putting back RFT on the car. After they took the money to change all 4 tyres for me already, so now im going to go and change back the fronts to 225/45/R18 and waste more money for no reason. Joke this garage.

There are a bunch of us who have switched to non-run flats and almost any new BMW that comes standard with run-flats has non-run flat options. So blaming it on switching these out is simply ignorance on their part.
