What makes these cars great
I recently had a day that illustrates what makes these cars so great.
I was going to play golf in Lompoc, about a 2 hour drive. Between me and the golf course was some mountains. I flew thru the twisties, throwing the car left and right. Then turned off at the top of the mountain and found a nice little trial. I crept along the back country, enjoying views few get to see. Then found the tarmac again and proceeded to fly around again. I got to the course and played a great round..... The versatility of this car is just amazing. I've owned 2 now and will likely buy another when this one gets too old. |

The X1 we know and love is quite dead Sadly this will probably be my last BMW, as they have completely abandoned what they were for the larger market of driving appliances. I had been mulling over the idea of going to an M240, but BMW's electric steering is just terrible.

I've driven the x2 and it was much better than the f48 x1. Closer in driving sportiness to our e84s.
If we were to replace our x1 it'll be either an x5 ( wife likes; me not so much) or a 328i Touring wagon. Probably compromised and end up in a x3. But at the point I might as well get the excellent Mazda CX-5. |

The engine is weak and lacks the energy to move that car as you are used to. The chassis has lots to learn from the old E84. BMWs 28i has 2 litre engine and 241 HP, even more than the new F48. Mazda has a 2.5 litre engine that makes 187 HP. All you nee to do is to jump from your X1 into the Mazda, take the test drive and drive your old guy home. You will love your X1 more. You will be better of with the M35 X2. I am in a similar dilema as the new X1 is terrible and the X2 interior sucks compared with old X1. If they will make the E84 new, I will buy it now, on the spot. I will buy the X2 as I like the exterior, but expect better materials and luxury interior as right now leaves much to be desired. |

I thought the X2 interior materials were better than the e84. My wife absolutely adored the courtesy X2 Sportline.... until I showed her the trunk space.
I think the new CX5 has a turbocharged version. |

I am waiting on a ‘15. I drove a x2 m35 over the winter. I agree with you on the looks of the x2. It’s the size I am after. How would it compare to the X1 35i Msport performance? Age and tech not withstanding. I’m currently rocking a e92 335i. So I’m familiar with the layout. |

I had an M340 for a week a little while back and hated the steering.

As for the new X1, if it was what was available when I got mine I never would have noticed or cared.
But having had the E84, getting the feel of a rear biased AWD and having a (cough cough) SUV that is actually a capable track car, there is no way that I could move to another BMW that is far less capable of a vehicle. That doesn't mean that in a future car I would rule out FWD or front biased AWD, it just means that I will not consider a BMW that is really just a Mini. If I want a Mini, I will buy a Mini.

Some of the comments on this thread reminds me that the e84 is a frankenstein BMW that has the driving dynamics of an e91 3-wagon powered by modern f3x engines. What's not to like?

I've never been a truck person, they always felt very sluggish... I'm more of a small car type of person, so after I sold my e90 330i I started looking for ways to replace it that can make a bit sense, until I saw one at a dealership and tried it just for fun lol
I ended up falling in love with it! I have never driven with such a care free feeling! No bump stop is big enough, no entrance is deep enough lol

Wow, and to think I might have spent more on a 2016... I ended up just going with the 2013 (E84) platform with out knowing all these little details, looks like it was the right choice, better platform for less money... thats incredible.
I can't remember the differences between the F48 and E84 in terms of steering or drive bias but all I know is that this model is basically a snowmobile in the snow, it's ridiculously confident and that RWD bias essentially steers it around corners in the slushy stuff. I'd love to try the F48 just to see the difference. |

If you visit the F48 forum you will see from the thread topics that the crowd is different from your usual BMW driving enthusiasts.
I think the demographics for the f48 x1 are those that want a the BMW badge but do not care a whole lot about driving dynamics. It's a badge level up over the usual CRV, RAV4 etc... Do they even know if it is a tarted up Mini? Do they even care? |

I just think it is sad that the F48 will be some people's first impressions of a BMW.

I drove F48 for about a week. The only thing it had going for it was a roomier back seat and a power liftgate. Once I got back in my 2015, I was like ahhh, this is how it should be. I do wish I had better storage for my mini spare tire but that’s about it.

X1 today is definitely not was the X1 used to be. But this shift is probably more of a business decision than anything else as BMW saw that people attracted to the X1 wanted a point A to B car not what the E84 was, a more raw and driver oriented car.

Drove my 14 X1 s28i M sport yesterday with 225/40r18 and 255/35r18 in 104 deg f weather.
It is so smooth on nice pavement (Michelin PS4S tires). You barely push gas and it pushes hard with no hystrionics of big revs. I've discussed how the temps generally run 215 deg f with AC on, but if you cruise without any speed or gas inputs the engine will run up to 236 deg f without using Eco-Pro. And it will idle at 193 deg f for hours if necessary in the heat. However, I just now have driven in temps of 99+ deg f, and noticed that it runs at 198 to 204 when hot outside. Computer knows to add heat for efficiency when it can. Drive hard on track approx 209 deg f. |
