X1 sunroof liner issues

Today the liner for my sunroof decided to stop working, the sunroof itself works with no issues but the liner doesn't open or close any ideas what can be wrong?

I just ran into the exact same issue. The glass sunroof operates fine, but it seems like the rear headliner panel is stuck / detached from sliding mechanism.

Did you find any resolution to this? Any advice?

Thanks!

I’d check You Tube, I just accidentally dropped a bottlecap into the opening on my M235 sunroof and there's a video on how to take the entire roof mechanism out if I decide I need to actually get it out. Darn thing feel behind the roof and can’t be fished out. Haven't had any issues with our E84 sunroof.

Hi...sorry to revive an old thread. I have recently had the same headliner issue with my X1 and was wondering if you had any information to share. The front portion that sits over the driver/passenger moves freely without any problems. The rear portion over the rear seat is detached/stuck in the rear headliner. It was fine one day, stuck the next. Glass portion works in all positions...FYI. Thanks for your time.

Same problem here. My front shade will move forward when pressing the button, but I have to manually push it back into the roof liner. Rear shade is stuck in the roof liner and even manually pull it out.

Based on the research across BMW model forums, sounds like the headliner/panoramic glass has to be removed in order to fix the sun shade. I could be wrong though since I have not taken mine to a shop yet for any estimate.

I wish I could pull the rear shade and just leave it closed. I'm thinking of getting the glass vinyl wrapped white to match the paint for now.

I am swamped at work this week but made an appointment to get this fixed next week. I have my dogs with me daily, With them in the rear. I would like it fixed before it begins to get warm. I’ll keep you posted on the outcome.

Good luck, luckily this winter has been pretty manageable. Which shop are you going to? And also will you be calling BMW NA to see if they can help out on any costs? I've been putting off trying to call to see what they would say, but I'm sure I would have to also have my car at a dealer for BMW NA to do anything about it.

I was thinking about going to the New Century BMW certified collision repair center once I've done other maintenance/mods.

Anyone get their sunroof liner fixed? Mine's come off too. Removing the entire sunroof sounds like a big job. I tried looking up parts, and it seemed like replacement parts might be expensive not even counting the labor.

My sunroof shade was not working properly, only the rear would move, but the sunroof was working fine. I ended up just swapping the whole sunroof cassette and shade for one out of a salvaged car. It was a pretty straightforward job. Trickiest part is removing the headliner. I found a guy on Youtube (the lucky needle) that had a really good walkthrough for the headliner removal.

What ever you do...do not try to reset the sun roof by pressing and holding the sunroof button. This triggered the antitrap warning and my sunroof was no longer operable. It was actually stuck in the open position for a couple of days.

Examining the old parts it appears that the slider mechanism came out of the slot that it needs to be in.

Anyone get a quote from a dealer or independent shop? I'm sure it would be exorbitant..

About 5 years ago, I had a sunroof assembly break on a 2004 X5 (my previous vehicle). A local dealer wanted more than $6000 to fix it. In the case of our X1s, the main glass assembly is still intact BUT they would have to rebuild it anyway which leads me to believe that the labor cost would be about the same.

Dealer Cost

I have a 2016 X1 with a broken sunroof screen. I took it to the dealership this week and was quoted $2,000 to replace it. I said, no thanks!

I had to rebuild mine last weekend. Cost me about $400 in parts and 3 or so hours of my time.

Hi e36addict, would you mind sharing the parts that cost $400? What did you do to fish out the back screen? Was it necessary to take out the entire headliner or just the back end? I have a 2013 x1. Thank you.

Yes I had to remove the complete head liner and sunroof cassette assembly. I have a black headliner so I replaced both fabric sliding parts due to the material peeling off, and the plastic sliding parts for the shades. Those come in a kit, PN 54-10-2-993-888. I also work at a BMW dealer, so I got cost on these parts, which saves a bit.

Mine has been broken 2 years. I've found independent guys won't even quote. Two years ago my dealer, quoted $2,600. Can anybody list the steps to get into the required parts. I did buy this kit 2 years ago but haven't had the guts to even attempt. I'd do a 3 hour fix but I don't even know where to start. I'm thinking clips are going to start breaking getting into it. Having a panoramic sun roof that doesn't work is a bit of a waste. Mine, the back shade broke two years ago.... heard a crack and it was done, used the front for the last two years and now it broke too. Both pieces move freely by hand, it's crappy little plastic pieces that either can't take the heat or just weren't designed for the life of the car .
Even a bullet point list of steps would help. A youtube would be even better.

Hello all, I just had the same exact problem on my wife's X1. Took a look at it and it seems like the back plastic tabs on rear sun shade are broken. I can even see one sitting right on the headliner. But of course I've managed to make everything worse by dropping the rear shade into front's slide (I guess). What's happening is when the car thinks that both shades are inside the headliner ready to come out; after I initiate the 'shades come out' movement; the back one comes out since the front one is already out. This was not like this before I poke the back shade down to a mechanism. It used to be able to wiggle up and down inside the headliner but after dropping it down to wherever, it does not want to go up or down or back. It is locked in place. It comes out with the motor, does not come back because the back tabs are broken. Any suggestions?

I have my front glass panel removed, both front & rear sliding panels are out (had to cut The rear out). Also have removed the entire headliner.

If anyone can help with removing the rear glass panel I would appreciate it. I believe this need to be removed to replace the rear sliding shade
