Uh oh. Transmission problems?

2014 X1 2.8l x-drive

Yesterday, getting ready to merge onto the expressway doing about 40MPH. Give it a bit of gas to merge into traffic. After it downshift once the car started to accelerate, but started jerkimg. Let off the gas and cruising its fine.

Today after work, decided to do a little testing. In manual mode, 1st, and 2nd accelerate no issues, slowly, fast, stepping on it etc. Shift it into 3rd going about 25. Step on it and stuttering all through the rev range. Shift to 4th, step on it... same thing.

I think the transmission is slipping.

Only 65K miles.

Anybody experienced this?

Turn the traction control off, and try. X-drives are known to stutter with uneven worn tires.

If it's same size tires and wheels all around, move one side front to back. Then, if it still does it move the other side front to back. Use a tread depth gauge to see the total wear of tires.

If the transmission was slipping you would see the RPM slip as well. Could be an xDrive tire size issue. I have heard of people saying that worn tires and new tires with slightly different sizes (staggered) have caused shuttering. What I mean is that the rolling diameter was already a little different from front to back and then once the tires are replaced on either the front or rear only, that was enough to cause an issue.

Something else to consider is just something in the ignition system. Not sure what this "shutter" feels like though.

My guess would be coilpack, spark is shorting under high engine load.

Or bad gas perhaps? Can you check for codes via OBDII reader.

Thanks all. Took it to my buddies shop. Showed him what it was doing and finally it threw an error code.

Service engine light and "engine malfunction" and entered limp mode.

Codes read engine mis-fire on cylinder 2. Then cylinder 2 deactivated at fuel injector.

However, in the garage we cant get it to replicate by reving the engine. Only when between gears 3 and 4. Doesn't misfire in 1 or 2.

Time to make an appointment with BMW. They just changed my timing chain, wonder if this is related.

Does it happen throughout the RPM range or only at certain rpm?

If you're on 65k original coils and spark plugs, probably due for replacement.

It happens through the rev range, but only between gear 3 and 4 and 4 and 5

Spark plugs and coils replaced. Runs much smoother now, and the problem is gone.
