Can anyone tell me the purpose of this part?

Hi All,
I've been tracking down rattles in my center console on my X1 e84 xdrive35i. I found this tucked way up inside the center console, that blue line is the rubber band that goes around the cup holder tensioners. Picture is from the bottom of the center console pointing upwards. Seems this parts purpose is only to rattle the steel ball.

Anyway, I took it out and discovered the center console storage area latch seemed loose, but still worked. It is essentially a steel ball that rattles inside a plastic housing, see second image, so I put double sided tape on both sides and reinstalled it. This wasn't the main rattle, but it was contributing.

Thanks,
Dervin.

I saw that as well when I needed to clean my idrive knob from a coffee accident.
I think someone mentioned it's a left over rear pivot point from the manual transmissions.

Thanks for the lead kiloTHREE. So this makes me think it must share the center console with a 1-series or something similar that had a manual. I wish this car was available in a manual.... Wow, a i6 turbo and manual in a tiny sleeper SUV... Even with the Alpina flash to my tranny it's not a "great" auto, like the 28i's got, it's just acceptable, with a bonus consistent error code that makes me cringe every time I check my codes.

BTW, still can't figure out the sound of a marble rolling back and forth, side to side, as if in the center console storage tray... So I just put change in the cup holder and pretend the sound is only the change

Rattle Found!!!

In case anyone was following this, which I doubt. The rattle was two sticks of Chapstick that had fallen into the rear foot heater vent and was rattling around in the plastic heater pipe... I bought this car used 6 months ago and have been tearing it apart to find the rattle.

Good one Universe!!!

Good thing you found it before really cranking the heat and melting the Chapstick.
