2 new tires
2013 xdrive 28i. Running Conti DWS 06. Nails in both right-side tires - the front was just above the tread into the sidewalk, so not plugable. I got 2 new ones, thinking the new would go on the rear, the bad tire would be trashed, and the plugged tire will become a spare. Picked-up the car in the pouring rain, so didn't look close till later in the day. I was surprised they put the new tires on the front - maybe they thought it's FWD?
Question 1: New on the rear or front? Question 2: Where to get an inexpensive rim for the spare? Thanks! |

What's the mileage/tread depth on the new ones? You have to be careful to not go too different in overall diameter for the sake of the center diff.
My X1 wears rear tires significantly quicker than the fronts...so that's at least one reason to start them off in the rear...to get them evened up with the front asap.

Discount tire is a very good dealer in the US, and they'll put the new one on the back if it's same size all around.
The idea is that if either rear tire blows, it makes vehicle unstable, and prone to flip as it spins around. If the front blows it just pulls hard that direction, but understeers so no spin. Even as a tire seller we just put em where it felt right, and if I had FWD only vehicle, i think I'd put up front, and leave minimal tread on back where no wear. |

Unless there's a major compelling reason to do it otherwise, Always put new tires on the rear. Better traction in the rear reduces the chance of spinning under braking.

Although I don't have a proper tread depth measuring tool, I get the difference to be about 3/16. The new tires are totally new, 0 miles. The owner's manual is silent on the topic.

I just talked with my service advisor at my BMW dealership. He said there is no issue as long as same size tires are on the same axle. He said he typically advises that the new tires be placed on the front, but acknowledged that opinions vary.

I don't think one could argue against the fact that a LSD is going to last longer the closer each end is 1:1. Certainly it would.

The problem is the same manufacturer changes it service intervals according to what their warranty covers or doesn't. It's easy legally to point blame to tire size difference when shit hits the fan.

Gheez, I have the BMW dealer and my 40 years in business tire guy saying "no issue". I looked around online but I could only find discussions of "potential" problems, but didn't find any with actual problems. I have a lot of respect for your knowledge, Prem Apex.
What to do? If issues arise, are there any warnings? Thanks |
