X1 review in latest WhatCar
There is a comparison test in the latest UK WhatCar, comparing X1, Q5, evoque and xc60.
WhatCar are consistent in not being overly praising of the X1, especially the interior quality, though do give praise to road handling, cabin noise (may surprise some here) and performance. Yet again though they can't resist commenting on their favorite issue - offset pedals. I'm not even aware of this in mine, yet they make out for both the BMW and Audi that it's up there with having a brick lodged in your back - never understood this, though again, they are consistent. What surprised me was re-sale - X1 was worst by a mile - 1 year old 23d worth £17,000 compared to q5 at £27,000! It just gets worse from there with 4 year old 23d worth under £9,000. The first time I drove my X1 I noticed the pedals... for about a mile. Now I wouldn't even know they're offset.
Interior is fine, though there are a few rattles The X1 is never going to be a hit with the car mags, so I say jog on WhatCar. I see more and more X1's on the road (London's M25) every week which tells its own story. And another thing... who really goes out and buys a car thinking about how much it'll be worth in a year? Enjoy your car whatever it is J. |

Price on the q5 is £2000 more to begin with though. I'm not entirely sure I trust the figures as it implies that the X1 is worse than a Renault and in no planet I live is that the case from a brand or desirability perspective. It also goes against the values just about every other BM with the exception of the 7-series. I did see a 1yr old brown one for sale the other day - £20,000. Bearing in mind we don't have VAT here that's quite a difference to the mags view and the shop value. Last edited by DWB1873; 08-27-2011 at 06:24 AM.. |

I can guarantee you won't find a 4 year old 23d X1 for under £9k come the time. You'd struggle to get a 4 year old 123d for that. These magazines do my head in at times. |

PS: Just noticed the comparison was with the q5, again, please anyone, if in doubt go drive one. The ride and handling is rubbish. And yes I also agree with a post above, the pedals are waaay more offset than on the X1. In short, for what it's worth, I drove them all and the x1 was the best. I am happy with my purchase. Oh and one last thing, all car journos are biased in one way or another.

Trying to be objective here ( while being an owner of a X1 2.0d), true the front grills of the Q3 and Q5 looks pretty sharp, but their side on profiles can easily be mistaken with a Toyota RAV4.

Audi have the most ridiculous pedal positions there are, the pedal heights are all different, the clucth is higher than the brake and the brake is 2" higher than the gas.
This means finding a comfy position is a nightmare. I get cramp in my shins driving manual Audis, I honestly can't drive them. The X1 will be a £12k car at 4 years old, which is around 50% of its new price (18d sDrive) and pretty damned good. I bet the Q3 will be about the same, however, it is a £2k more expensive car. the Evoque will be the best I think, many are offering the £35k car with media and auto for £425 a month contract hire, which pretty much shows where it will be in 3 years time. |
