I really had hoped for the Taycan but the premier was somewhat of a let down. I'm hoping Porsche is being conservative with their figures but if not, they're losing in the numbers game to the Model S

Update September 7
Seems as though he may realize Porsche beat him at this battle.

Update September 11
Model S laps Laguna Seca. Fastest lap

If they can pull it off with a production vehicle then kudos.

If it's going to be a custom car just in sake of beating Porsche on the track then that doesn't count in my eyes.

Wonder what will become of this. I don't think Porsche would be too proud/ignorant/naive to not at least test against a Model S already. Full expect it to have a better ring time than Model S, but crazier things have happened.

I can only imagine this ending a bit embarrassing for Tesla.

Haven't privateers been unable to finish a lap in the S? What's Elon got up his sleeve. One off runs aren't impressive.

Yeah something has to be different. Maybe there is a new "track" model coming out that won't overheat the batteries.

Exactly, between poor weather conditions, mechanical issues and other factors, I've heard manufacturers could spend weeks trying to get a best lap time.

Dodge would never spend the money to get the Viper ACR a best lap time so an enthusiast group of owners helped fund the record setting run. They had poor weather and it didn't look like they were going to break any records but they finally did, however they lost a car due to a high speed tire failure.

Well if Musk is good at anything, it's stubbornly throwing money into a fire to make a point.

Even if, as suggested above, it means making a whole new version of a car just to set a pace.

Now I'm kind of excited to see what they come up with. Haha.

I guess that depends as the media will make a big deal about it and before you know it a lot of the masses will assume the Model S you can buy from the dealer can put up the same time at the ring. We saw it with the Civic Type R prototype (stripped interior, different tires, likely tweaked tune) put up a time that's not remotely close to what stock Type R's have run at the ring yet that doesn't stop Honda fanboys from stating over and over that the Type R is faster around the ring than an M2 or M3/4.

Elon is a douchebag but I do like his stepping up to the challenge here. If the Model S is competitive with the Taycan time, he's gonna be able to tell everyone to sit down and shut up

I'd accept a factory attempt as long as its independently witnessed and all mods disclosed. I mean the claimed Taycan time is a factory claim so it would be a fair comparison

They should have a heads up race or one after the other at the Ring on the same day to eliminate variables. Closed track, full inspections of both cars. Only drivers, last time Tesla had a guy in the passenger seat with laptop messing with the cars computer while running the lap and see who is King of the Battery Hill.

The only real/serious attempt I've seen on youtube (so on a relative quiet track with a guy that could drive/knows the track) ended in the car going into limp mode halfway because the batteries didnt have enough stamina to give the required power for that distance.

But that was quite some time ago. Maybe in the meantime batteries in the p100d got upgraded.

If Musk goes to the nordschleife with some non production model thats not for sale, its a bit unnecessary.

But 7:42 certainly isnt an unbeatable time for cars that have this much power.

While this is an older video and not a p100d I’m going to say that if they intend on using normal Model S batteries the second half of the lap is going to be very slow

What if it's all an 'Elon Musk hoax'?

Technically, afaik the "Nürburgring" is the GP circuit, and the track where all the records are set is called the "Nordschleife"

There's not much info given really in that tweet.

If he was the kind of person to step up to challenges in good faith that would be one thing, but everything about his reputation makes me believe that he will do absolutely whatever it takes to create the outcome he feels like he needs while also doing whatever it takes to obfuscate any cheating he had to resort to in the process of creating that outcome.

This is even more irrelevant than lap times for ICE cars. At least with those vehicles, you can run a few laps without worrying about the insane heat issues that seem to plague most electric cars, including Model S. OTOH, I wonder how many laps a Taycan can complete vs a similarly fast Panamera---and the time differential between laps for both.

Agreed. No BS please.

Although I think it would be pretty easy to set up a fair test with the proper observers, if Tesla allows it

I actually think that this is vitally important to one party - Porsche. Tesla can already stand pat on having marginally better street performance and range for less than half the cost. It's Porsche that needs to establish its bragging rights as the "track EV".

Elon is basically trying to land a knockout blow in the first round by taking away that advantage before the Taycan even hits showrooms
