Summer->Winter tires. Staggered->Standard ?
Hi All,
Nearing the end of summer and already thinking about winter tires and was hoping for some responses from the knowledgeable folks here. On a 2014 X1 3.5 M-Sport with 19's staggered setup Eagle F1 Asymetric 2 Run Flats. Not really loving them , but is what came with the car. Would like to find a dedicated winter setup as dealing with run flats on the current wheels . So....my questions that would love help on : Are there any issues with going from a staggered setup to a standard and back for seasonal tires ? Or would you look to find a staggered winter setup? It is easier to find a standard setup , especially for 18's so thinking about standard Assume most would recommend going down to 18's ? Thanks |

No harm in going back and forth between a staggered and square setup.
The more sidewall and skinnier the tire, the better. I will be running a 215/55/17 square. Not only are the tires cheaper but additional sidewall is great for potholes. |

+1 for the 17" tires. I'm done with low profile (or even lowish) due to potholes and rim rash.
You might need spacers for square set up, depending if the offset is compensated by the staggered wheels, or if the hub's offset is compensating the wheels. More likely it's the former and you're fine, but best bet is call in to your dealer and get it confirmed |

I have a standard setup for winters - 225/50R with 17" rims. The softer ride is very much welcome and, as other members said, the larger sidewall helps with potholes especially when you don't see them on unplowed roads. I run a staggered 19" setup in the summers, very similar to yours except the tires. I didn't need spacers or any other modifications, but did buy the entire set along with TPMS from Tire Rack.

Like others we have a dedicated winter setup. Except it is like our summer setup on 18" wheels. We would have gone with 17" wheels but got a good deal on some 18" wheels that the wife liked. And like many others we ditched the runflats on both the summer and winter set ups. If we go on a trip and are really concerned about a spare we can take one of the winter/summer tires as a spare. The beauty of an 18 square setup for both.
vstolpner, is spot on about low profile wheels, even with 18" we are getting hit with rim rash because of potholes around here. |

Personally I picked up a complete second set of refurbished wheels on ebay (exactly the same as my original 17" wheels) and put winter tires on those. This way it made for easy swapping between summer/winter tires and serves as a self-insurance policy in case of wheel damage.

I ended up getting a set of 17" wheels from an E60 as it had the same size tire. I actually got it with brand new Goodyear Assurance Tripletread rubber for 600 CAD and it was so much better than the OE tires that I swapped the tires and sold the OE tires.
Only note is the bolt size is a little different on the E60 but I don't expect it makes any difference as the hub size is the same. |
