Something that doesn't get a lot of love in the U.S...the Toyota/Lexus 1uzfe. 4.0 V8, DOHC, 6200 redline(6500 for the VVTI version). Not a power house by any means, but torquey as a V8 should be and a lot of fun in my 95 SC400 project car. Sadly, the V8 SCs only came with automatics, but manual conversions exist and I'm planning on one. With a straight through exhaust, this thing sounds really, really good, and lowered on coilovers and poly suspension bushings has made the Luxo coupe a real driver.

That has happened to me twice on my daily, not V8's both turbos and just for good measure the valve bits blew threw the hair dryer just to add some more cash to the repair bill.

Hard to beat the sound of old school fury. Here is one seriously angry Ford.

Do the heads then. Common sense at this point. Mine was reliable, but thanks for chiming in.

Same here. I bought a car that already had the issue addressed. Kind of like looking for an M3 with the Rod Bearings already done.

I beat the crap out of mine and pretty much every model I have ever owned and it just seemed to continue to beg for more!

My 2013 Boss 302 had the redline set at 7900rpm and had no problem making power at that speed.

I see that no one has mentioned the Miata. The later NC models will rev out to 7500rpm before fuel cut.

He's at least talking the new ND motor, which I gave partial credit to. The NA-NC still don't rev though and benefit from shifting under redline.

Question - because my friend has a '12 Boss 302 and he told me he spoke with engineers of the car when he went to that driving school you get with the purchase. According to him, they mentioned that the reason the engine redlines at 7500 RPM is because the ECU can't keep up with the calculations at a higher RPM - this was the reason that the car feels like it keeps making power until the abrupt fuel cutoff at 7500.

Just curious - did you need to make any hardware changes along with raising the rev limiter, or was my friend misinformed with a bunch of hogwash?

Thanks

I can't speak from authority as an engineer, but it makes sense. Any processor has limits as to calculations per unit of time and data throughput. In an 8-cylinder engine with 32 valves and 8 coils and plugs, there's a lot of things happening every millisecond at high revs. At 7200 RPM, that's 120 revs per second, or .12 revs per millisecond. In that millisecond where the engine makes about 1/8 of a revolution, several valves will be in motion, a plug will fire, etc. If the ECU is only able to capture a small sample of the events that are happening then it'll be ineffective at regulating the engine, and efficiency and durability will suffer.

I also understand why it makes sense hypothetically, but if see5 was able to increase it 400 RPM and make power without a piggyback, coprocessor, or standalone ECU of some sort, then my friend is going to be really interested to know this haha.

You don’t really know of it was “making power” unless you dynoed it. My 2.0 would happily rev above 7, it seemed fast cuz I was going fast, but it wasn’t producing it’s peak hp and especially not torque. Fun and loud, but not really accomplished anything.

What? They benefit from being revved up. I've owned 3 NAs (One boosted) & my current NB Mazdaspeed Miata...

My MSM doesn't make full power until 6K RPM for crying out loud

You know that engineer was pulling your leg about that computer not being able to keep up, right?

The 1987 5.0 Mustang GT was advertised as having an ECU that was more powerful than the computer used to go to the moon in 1969. The EEC-IV, as it was called, is capable of performing a million calculations a second while running at a measly (by today's standards) 15mhz. This 22 year old EEC-IV was used in Formula 1 at the time. High rpm's were not a problem.

And that ECU is an antique by today's standards.

My Rx-8 was fun, miss the handling and high revving nature. But it needed more power for sure, even with a turbo it needed much more but the engines are just shit reliability wise.

My dad's ND was dead reliable. He might have had the only one. For the street, the sequential turbo thing was pretty ideal. Provided it wasn't hot out. Or raining. Or too humid. Or too dry.

Exactly. Power peaks at 6k and just fades off after that. Methinks you've never had what this thread is talking about. Corvettes, Miatas, Challengers and an MS6 are not rev happy cars.
