FWIW, I believe the original story, and I bet 9 times out of 10, an SRT8 beats the 335i in a straight line. It's a muscle car, and a pretty badass one. Does it really matter that it can beat a 335i at a stoplight? OTOH, based on the SRT8 driver's story, my guess is that the 335i driver was not really racing because he was still in the break-in period. He was just toying around, but not flogging his car. We all do that sometimes.

i didnt think dodge vipers were track cars? a big heavy front moundted engine is not really ideally suited to a track, a mid engined moster would be better

Even if he did beat a 335i I am still not impressed. Why is it all american cars have to go to such huge displacements to get some horsepower. It's just sad and makes them look stuck in time and way behind on technology.
I would be impressed if they took that 6.1 and made it 610 horsepower or use 4.25 liter to get 425 horses. Othewise it's like we're still in the 70's. I have driven SRT8 before - just to see what it's all about. It's stupid fast but not for a modern 6.1 liter v8. Give that engine to BMW to work on and it would smoke M5 all day long. I know what someone's going to say that it would be $100k if BMW worked on that car. Cheers |

The SRT8 is a butt-ugly car. I didn't buy a 335i to street race and will probably laugh in the rear view mirror of anyone who bolts away from a stop light expecting me to join in. I don't need an ego boost by having pissing contests with knuckledraggers in muscle cars - just doesn't float my boat. At the end of the day I'd still prefer to be driving my BMW and getting reasonable gas mileage while still having close performance to the USS SRT8 boat. Street racing is stoopid and frankly a felony these days I believe, but to each his own.

Guys, not biggie.
The SRT8 is a fast car. It runs 0-60 in 4.7 seconds time and time again. It's relatively easy to launch, is an auto, and has all kinds of power. With a properly driven 335i, the two cars would be close off the line with a slight advantage to the SRT-8. The SRT8 is also running high 12's @ 107-109 mph stock. Stock for stock they are a slightly faster car, big deal. Now do the same race at 3000+ feet in elevation. The 335i will be the slightly faster car. Do the same race at 6000+ feet in elevation and the 335i will WALK away. I personally like the 300C SRT-8, just wish they made it 10-15% smaller. That car with that engine that was 1 foot shorter, a bit skinnier and not quite as tall and weighing 3800-3900 pounds would be pretty awesome. |

I don't doubt that SRT8 is a badass musclecar. Not sure what we're trying to prove dragging it against a 335i.
I remember the first time I test drove a heavy Durango with the regular Hemi motor. Man, did that thing seem fast and feel mean for an SUV. |

Even after all the said and done, the two cars could be dead even BUT:
300CSRT8 = LESS THAN 10 mpg 335(w or w/out tuning) = GREATER THAN 25mpg We win!

Just to add to what's been said about the engineering behind the cars.
The SRT8 uses a 6.1 liter displacement V8 HEMI to produce 425 hp. In cubic inches this is a 372. Its combined mileage is rated at 14.7 l/100km (16 mpg). It is an improvement, but not that big of one, over the muscle car era. So impressive hp but hardly an engineering marvel. The 335i, by contrast, uses a 3.0 liter (183 cu in) displacement straight 6 twin turbo (no lag) to produce 300 hp (factory underrated) with 10.2 l/100km (23 mpg) combined mileage. Hello. That isn't a marvel. That's just plain sick.
