N55 woes

Man I love this car but I think it’s time for something else. Today was a loud noise again and this time power steering pump. I also replaced the water pump. It was noisy. I’m less than impressed by bmw longevity this time. I have 80k and have replaced more than any car before.

I’m sorry to hear- Nobody has replied so I thought I would say something. I’m at 43K in a 2015 and have only had it for a few months/ couple thousand. I sincerely hope I’m not in for that same fate. I hope your case is somewhat rare. I did have the Valvetronic motor replaced right when I bought it. Warranty is up in December. Have not made any decisions about buying an extended one. Anyway I love it so far!

Is it just two pumps that has you stressing longevity? The water pump sucks on everything bmw from this generation, but on the grand scale of things is that really that bad for total maintenance over 80k?

So far I haven't had to replace anything in the 11,000 miles I have put on the X1. The 335i has had a small handful of things that were covered in the CPO. Oil filter housing, oil pan gasket, and coolant expansion tank. Things that were not N55 specific were the seat belt butler, 12v outlet, and the drivers side locking mechanism.

Transfer case. All pulleys. Belts. Expansion tank x2. Oil Filter housing. All at 50k. And now power steering pump. I knew the water pump was a thing.
That’s 10gs on a 5yr old car after the tranny and diffs were also serviced. This is my 18th German car and I’m beginning to think to go somewhere else. Maybe just Daily driver that is.

Don’t get me wrong. This is my favorite bmw since my e30 m3. But dang.

Ouch, seems like bad fortune. At 61k miles I've done maintenance items only (plugs, oil). I need to service the Diffs, tranny, and transfer case.
I use my less complicated E90 328i DD for my 70 mile RT work commute so this car lasts longer.

Just curious, which indie shop do you use?

I've used Bavarian for an oil change, but would like to have a few other places in my back pocket to be able to estimates from if it comes time for something larger!

Sorry to hear about your experience with the N55.

Oil filter housing gasket, water pump, and expansion tank are normal failures and should be expected to die after about 50k miles (all those went out on mine).

I'm curious about your pulleys and belts.. What symptoms indicated that they need replacing? I'm wondering if there is a relation between those belt/pulley failures and power steering pump issues, as they are literally connected and part of the same serpentine belt accessory system.

The filter gasket leaked oil on the pulleys and belts. It made a horrible squeal sound.

I moved to st Pete Florida so I use a great shop here called midnite tuning.

What type of you driving do you do? Highway, city, or mixed?

I did virtually all highway, longer drives, and no issues so far at 62k.

Can these parts be replaced without waiting for them to fail assuming car is still under warranty or with extended warranties?

Would be a hassle having to wait until the car stops in the highway if BMW is aware anyway that these things give up after a while.

I'm at 45k now, out of std warranty. I have the an extended warranty with platinum coverage but still not sure it these are regular parts they cover.
