filling gas stops prematurely
Just about every time I fill gas, the automatic shutoff in the gas nozzle shuts off even when I am no where near full. It does this almost every time to the point I have to hold the nozzle the whole time so as to re-start gas flow with the trigger. is this just my car or are others having the same issue? I end up having to activate the gas nozzle about 10-15 times for a full tank of gas.

Have you tried different pumps or different gas stations? Have you tried adjusting the angle that the nozzle goes in?

This is with just about all pumps. I frequent shell though. Has been going on at least a year but wasn't the case when new. I don't get it. I've tried different angles, leaving the nozzle out a little more... etc.

This link explains how the shutoff mechanism works. The only thing I can think of is that something is blocking the hole from suction. Play with repositioning the nozzle.

This happened to me on the car I had before the X1, which I won't name but it starts with "J" and ends with "overpriced American piece of shit."
It's most likely something in your vapor recovery system. In short, as you fill up, the air you displace doesn't vent directly into atmosphere. Instead, it's forced through a mechanism that filters pollutants before venting. If that system gets clogged or otherwise damaged, your tank may not be able to vent air when you fill up, causing pressure to increase and throwing the valve in the fuel pump that senses the increased pressure, which it interprets as a full tank. Anyway, you're not imagining things, take it into the shop and they'll sort you out. |

Did anyone ever get to the bottom of this? The idea that the air can't be displaced during fill, and the subsequent increase in pressure causes the shutoff mechanismn in the pump to trigger makes sense. I'm not sure where to look first though. I've found some generic diagrams for vent tubes here and there, but don't know where it would be on the E84 X1... Would the E90 be the most similar? E87? Would real OEM be the best place to figure it out? A shop manual?
Thanks for any help anyone can provide, |

Find a pump where your car slants to the drivers side, and gas will run in easier.
Also, hold nozzle up slightly and run at half speed. Old nozzles start doing that somewhat. |

Thanks - I will give that a shot... though it's a bit tricky here in Jersey, where everything is full service by LAW lol!

I have the exact same issue. It happens at some pumps and not others. When it happens, I just pull up on the nozzle. It's a pain in the ass to hold it there, but not that big a deal. Of course, the attendants in Jersey will definitely not hold the nozzle up the whole time.
