Bugatti confirmed my build slot yesterday!

It's customary to pay $3-12.5 million for a new Bugatti. But for 2019, the coveted brand is doing a limited run of 500 hand-built Bugattis for, ummm... the "slobbering commoners" (Jalopnik) like me.

Their latest "Bugatti Baby II" has a price of under $35K, garnering the new model a lot of headlines.

Due to the inherent collectibility of this limited-run Bugatti, it sold out very quickly. BUT... I was quick enough to get a confirmed place in line. Configuration to follow. My Bugatti will likely spend its life as a well-pampered placeholder in the garage.

I have so many questions. The Bugatti Baby II? Was there a Baby I? Is it road legal? Does it come with a vintage helmet and goggles? Are we now required to address you as 'Baby Driver'??

I'm having strong doubts about following through with an order after learning today that the manufacturing is outsourced to Pocket Classics in the UK, a company that specializes in miniature vintage cars for about half (cough cough) the price that Bugatti is charging. In fact, Pocket Classics had independently done the Type 35 previously, so it hardly seems exclusive.

$35k seems like a large amount of money for that. Unless you happen to have a full size Bug that this will match, I think I'd rather spend that kind of money on a Caterham. At least you'd be able to drive it on the street and it would be a fun track car too.

I would take a hard pass. I understand the excitement around things like this and grabbing a rare, limited edition item but once the initial excitement dies down you're just left with regret.

Let's start with what it is...It's a toy. Probably not even road legal, with a whopping 13HP.

What's the most realistic upside? It holds its value over the next few years and you decide to sell because you have a $35k power-wheels in the garage when that money could go to something else...net net you lose $0 and probably didn't enjoy it. I don't see it appreciating...and even if it did (let's say, 5% each year) is that really where you want to park your money?

What's the most realistic downside? These things don't hold value and you sell for maybe $20k in a few years, losing $15k so you could have a toy Bugatti parked in the garage.

To me the upside simply isn't worth the downside. No judgement in the decision, I get caught up in these things too...it's fun and exciting...but I've learned walking away is usually best.

I fully agree with your entire post.

The initial luck of snagging a place in the Bugatti line was a cheap momentary thrill, but upon digging deeper there just doesn't seem to be any compelling case for proceeding. Easy come, easy go. :

Seems like a strange vehicle to me and not sure what you do with it. Is it because you are really into Bugatti's, looking for a golf cart type vehicle or looking for an investment? Nothing wrong with any of them I just don't understand what the reason for buying it is.

It does have the all important performance "limited-slip differential"

The Baby II has a rear-wheel-drive, battery-electric powertrain, a limited-slip differential and regenerative braking, along with a few power settings: “child mode” limits it to 1.4 HP and a top speed of 12.4 mph, “adult mode” brings it up to 5.4 HP and 28 mph, and there’s also a “Speed Key” upgrade for a lightning-fast, singe-your-eyebrows setting of 13.4 HP and no speed limiter.
