Android Head Unit Issue

So I took the leap and installed a chinese aftermarket android unit with an Apple CarPlay adapter. It works fine except for one frustrating issue:
The OEM BMW Business radio shuts off after 20 minutes, and every 20 minutes thereafter but the Android unit stays on. I have also lost the steering wheel controls.
The car did not come with iDrive so it's the basic model with Business Radio.
The harness that came with the chinese unit plugs into the OEM radio harness and then the android unit. It also specified moving the 2 fibers cables from the OEM harness to the android harness, which I did. So power to the android unit comes on when I turn ignition on, but I have to turn OEM radio power on each time.
Lastly, when I shut off the engine and restart, I have to turn OEM radio power on each time as it doesn't keep the signal.
Any thoughts on how on a fix or how I might be able to bypass to keep power to the OEM?
