Help - X1 stranded!

Wonder if anyone has experienced the following and can provide some insight. I drive a 2012 X1 2.8 X-Line. The other night passed a car driving at a snail's pace and hammered my throttle to get by the vehicle and my guess is I hit the rev limiter. After passing the car, I lost all throttle response and there was no response from the throttle (gas pedal).

Basically I coasted to side of road. Anyway, car would not start and eventually battery I believe was almost dead as I was getting weird lights flashing when I tried to start. Waited 3 hours for tow, finally getting home at 3 AM.

Anyone have any insight in what happened? Appreciate.

Do you have access to the car or is at repair shop? IF you can open the oil fill cap and see if your timing chain is good. another thing to check is related to power: Did you have an issues with power after you "hammered the throttle"? I think there's a recall on a negative or positive cable.

There was a battery cable connector recall that affected a lot of cars:

Not sure if E84 was included. Even if not, I would still look at the Battery Safety Terminal (BST) first because it seems to go along with your symptoms.

Mechanic put in new battery and said no difference. I need to check with him tomorrow to ensure he had it coded to the car. He now has on hoist so going to check a ground cable that I found from another owner experience that had similar result. As soon as I hear anything concrete I'll post. Thanks for all your help.

Just thought I would pass along an update. Battery has been replaced, ground cable looks fine. At this time engine will not turn over at all so mechanic is pulling of parts to see if any belts are an issue. According to him the timing chain looks fine and intact. He did mention there were fluid spots over the bottom of the engine bay, not sure of the source.

Anyone got any ideas? I am getting nervous. Only have like 75K miles on the vehicle. Appreciate any insights, hints, etc. Thanks.

I am interested in knowing more. give us more update as you find out.

pool of fluids? what kind of fluids? coolant?

Not sure of fluid type. Says that timing belt looks intact and is disassembling to check other belts. At this time he is talking that engine basically seized. I know oil was fine. Starting to get nervous and p**ssed off at same time. Only have 70,000 miles on car. I have checked all recalls that I can find and nothing is showing up for my VIN.

Not sure if I should call BMW Canada Customer Service or if that would do any good. At this time is with my mechanic I've used for 20+ years and he knows his stuff. I will be back home tomorrow (travelling) all week so will drop in and see what the latest. I am just dumbstruck as I have never had a car do anything remotely close to this especially with low mileage and I have treated it like a baby!

Do you have the plastic oil filter housing? those things crack and cause oil and coolant to mix..can cause engine to seize.

Update- does not have the plastic oil filter housing. Basically the engine is seized. Phoned the BMW dealer 45 minutes away and asked about any kind of warranty and was told over limit (117,000 kms or approved 70,000 miles). I strongly suggested that a BMW should not seize at this low mileage and Service Advisor was very good and said would need to see car so back onto flat bed and off for evaluation. I'm nervous and upset at same time because there is something defective which caused the failure. So for now I have no wheels and at the mercy of BMW Canada to hopefully acknowledge the issue is something in the motor or related system causing the problem. Will keep everyone posted as things progress.

I'm in the same boat as you. Engine seized at the crank at 89k kilometers. BMW Canada are bullshiting me like crazy. BMW Laval made 10k in repairs in my engine in March 2017. Oil filter housing leak, timing chain replacement, defective VVT motor, bad eccentric shaft etc. My PPP warranty paid the 10k. One year after (3000km only) my engine SEIZED while downtown. Lost all power, power steering was dead and brakes were not working.

Dont let them get away with it man. I already saw my lawyer and if they try To fuck me over my legal notice is already written.

There is a serious problem with those N20 engines and BMW are trying to sweep this under the rug. The timing chain repair cost 3000$.... in the USA BMWNA issued an additonnal warranty for 7 years / 70k MILES. BMWCanada didnt. Same engine, same car, should be same warranty.

This Will FOR SURE be my last BMW. Well I'll keep my 240k kms 1989 535i since it's running like new, but modern bmws? Not a chance, especially with the way they treated me.

Yes. Its been a month now that it sits at the dealer. BMWCanada tries To make me lose my patience and pay. They are trying To find holes in my maintenance proofs To not pay.

Its not a maintenance issue and they know it, believe me. If I had To Guess, the oil pump chain failed, no oil To the block and boom, seized engine. I even asked BMW Laval To remove the engine to do a propor diagnostic of what led To the engine seizing and my advisor insisted that it would be wasted time and money.

BMW Canada service is awful.

What was the verdict. Was it the timing chain/ oil pump issue that caused your engine to seize? Was the timing chain guides a darker color brown? I have a late 13 built 2.0 and it appears to have the updated timing chain design. The chain guides are a light caramel colored and the chain design is also different. The timing chain tensioner located near the turbocharger is also different from pictures i'v seen of earlier built 2.0 engines, thinner bolt head. I also switch to a 5w40 oil instead of the fuel efficient 0w30 fe oil. The 0w30 has a lower HTHS than what the 2.0 was originally design for, good for fuel economy, not so good for engine wear.

I never said it was, i'm just using the heavier spec hths oil that was originally
used before the 0w30 fe oil was introduced for cafe purposes.
