Warranty void; FOD in Turbo BMW x1 2012

[IMG][/IMG]

Hey guys I'll go straight to the point

I have an extended warranty here in Canada with PPP auto. It covers : Turbo, Case, Internal parts, Turbocharger valves, Electronic control and detector, Intercooler

They will not honor the warranty of my damaged turbo since they say it's a foreign object who did the damage and thus it isn't a warranty case.

I want to know if this kind of damage could have been done by something else than a FO in the turbo.

My guess is they just don't want to pay and take the easy narrative. They have to be 100% sure and they aren't. They even said it could be some ice since I live up north a little (yeah right same temperature as Montreal.)

Hope you turbo gurus out there can help me on this one since a turbo replacement is like 2-3000 I guess..

Thanks for your time and have a great day

PS: the X1 is in the shop for over 8000$ already.

-Timing chain replacement
- Valvetronic Motor/Eccentric Shaft replacement
-Oil filer box replacement
-Rear driver side window motor
- both front door actuator
-Stab pins (wtf is that)
-rear ball joints
-Turbo...

I got myslef a lemon yeah

Curious: how many miles on the vehicle? Also is the shaft "loose"..if you hold the turbine nut does it wiggle? I suspect it would if a FO got in there but if it's not loose I would think it was a foreign object versus a failing turbo bearing or two.

Check the entire intake tract from the turbo to the air filter. Is the air filter intact, any holes in it? Possible for any screws to have come loose in the intake tract post-filter?

So is that the intake or exhaust side?

If you need a new timing chain well that could have smashed all the valves up, and some pieces came out the exhaust side.

88000km so about 50k miles I guess...

The car is at the dealer since last week. The warranty inspector came last week and approved all the others repairs but not the turbo. I was thinking he would of rejected all BUT the turbo.. what a turn of event lol..

No idea. The dealer sent me the pic. The car was making a wooooooosh when accelerating.

Thing is, I drove 700km to bring to car to the dealer and I made it so the Timing chain must have been OK at least. And like 2-3 months of city driving...

Inspector said the filer was as good as new. He said it was MAYBE ice from condensation that was the FO. They aren't 100% sure thus why I ask..

He also said all screws appeared to be at their place

To me they can't just say that a foreign object was the cause if they can't prove it.. Sounds too easy

Like what

Honestly with the 8+k repairs I lean more on the trade-in option... No idea what I would get instead tho.

Maybe the same just in better condition? Sounds like you got a lemon because these cars are pretty fantastic otherwise. Of course you probably have a pretty good idea of how they drive and if that fits with what you want.

Yeah I'm pretty much the only guy in here with so much problems with his X1.. My power steering is also a PITA. Not even full lock and it squeal like crazy. The X3 they gave me tho.. Soft as butter.

It looks like something failed and was sucked through the compressor wheel. I would be surprised if the intake valves aren't damaged or more really. They need to inspect the entire intake system and find where that FO came from. I doubt Ice could do that much damage.

That's the thing.. I'm not a mechanic, they are. They're the ones Who have all the tools to diagnostic and repair. One would guess that if they are changing the valvetronic motor and Know the condition the turbo is in they must have looked at the intake valves...

Now that I am thinking about it I had stalling problems awhile ago.. The Mazda dealer where I bought the X1 (bad move, I know) cleaned the intake and sensors.. Could this be related?? The stalling stopped after.

I feel so powerless in all of this.. They have the longer end of the stick and they know it.

I don't believe in coincidences, and the dealer that sold car was working upstream of the turbo airflow, so yeah, this could definitely be related.

Something must have gotten into it while working like a screw or nut. I'm not sure they'll acknowledge that though.

Well I have the bill that say they cleaned it and all... Worth a try. I have nothing to lose.

Did you call your insurance company? That's essentially what they're saying this is, an insurance claim vs. a warranty repair.

You think a insurance company would cover this?

If it's a foreign object, I'm pretty sure that would be covered under your comprehensive policy. Comprehensive covers "damage caused by an event other than a collision". A foreign object is just that.

Not really different than flood damage, for example. Or a tree falling on your car. A really tiny tree made its way into your intake, that's all.

That's what the dealer was alluding to...I'm actually surprised they didn't suggest you do the same thing when they told you it was a foreign object.

I would have them check your intercooler as that FO is most likely in there.

Or a blade fractured and damaged the rest of the blades. I've seen it happen on turbofan engines. If one blade had a casting imperfection, it would crack under the CF loads and broken piece would damage the rest of blades. Can you tell if it's a FOD hit or blade failure, not without a Scanning Electron Microscope.

However, if someone were working upstream of the turbo, the more likely scenario is hey somehow caused the damage.
