Mini Spare Compartment DIY
Hi All-
For a variety of reasons I decided to ditch the run flats and go with regular tires. I got the bimmerzone space saver spare. It fit ok in the trunk compartment with the rubber mat on top, but I was never happy with how jury-rigged it looked. So I decided to build a proper false floor with a spare tire compartment. Materials: -1/4" mdf with vinyl on one side ($20) -1/2" * 18" x 30" black foam board ($20) -Upholstery (TBD, part 2!) Starting point: I put the old trunk floor on top of the spare tire and used index cards to map out the distance I wanted to extend the old floor to the edges. Then I traced that image on the 1/4" mdf Cut it out and check the fit - it was pretty good but had to make some minor adjustments The next step was the hardest - I had to create supports around the edges to hold up the new false floor. I'm using stryofoam board and cutting it in layer, gluing them together and forming the right shape. In the middle of adding new pieces: What the workbench looked like: A finished side piece: For the front piece I knew that it would take a bit more abuse so I used a 3/4" thick piece of wood. Here are the edge pieces finished: And final fitment: I'm ordering the upholstery to match now, once that comes in I'll update with the finished product! .

I bought 2 yards of Black Automotive Trunk Lining from Online Fabric Store (.net). With shipping it was just over $20.
The match was close, but not perfect. The trunk lining is dead black, and the stock trunk lining is a little grey. I tried to match some greys but found them all to be too light, so I figured dead black will always match. Getting ready to glue the front support piece. I taped it out so I could put the glue on the edge later while I folded it around. Ready to be glued (note that I sprayed both the wood and the fabric). I used the Permatex headliner adhesive. Front piece all wrapped. The fabric has the ability to mold, you just have to push and pull it. Getting ready to place the false floor. And the backside after gluing. I didn't go crazy here - no one will see this. Unless you have a flat tire, in which case you have more immediate concerns. Some pics from the finished product: All said and done this was about $65 for the wood, foam, upholstery and glue.

Looks awesome. I can’t tell if you’ve got the spare synched down, how does this setup fair over speed bumps, pot holes etc?

I just tied it down with a nylon strap. Wrapped it around a bar and a hook that was available under the tire. Tightened it with a trucker hitch. I wasn't sure if it would be tight enough - but that sucks isn't going anywhere.
I have some big speed humps in my neighborhood and have no problem when hitting them fast - probably fares better than our subaru forester with a stock trunk.
