The youngest just started Keto, so he is buying all his own protein. The oldest regularly buys a chicken, some bell peppers, and brown rice. With that he is set for a week (and the dog gets some good meals too!)

So it's basically the wife and I now. Last week we probably spent 350-400 just on restaurant food I bet teh wife spent 75 last night to get the immediate meal, plus the stuff that is in the crock pot right now.

Come Spring, 2021 I'll have an extra $3000/month since the house will be paid off

That's probably within that ball park. I mean if I am really careful, I could do $360 with just the most basic stuffs to keep me alive. But realistically, if you add other luxury stuffs like wines, eating out, fancy cooking ... that could be up to $700.

That 300-400 includes wine and other grocery essentials, such as toilet paper, paper towels, shaving needs, soap, shampoo, cleaning products, laundry and dishwasher detergent, and so on.

My main local store is Albertsons which may not be the cheapest but not the most expensive either.

I guess for a larger family you could save a lot by going to Costo or Walmart, but for a single, it's just not practical buying large quantity of food. It's hard to store fresh vegetables for more than a week.

My estimate includes miscellaneous stuffs such as condiments, plastic/aluminum wraps and so on which could cost quite a bit.

Well - you live in Iowa. I imagine your selection of other activities to spend money on besides drinking is limited.

this is pretty futile. some people shop at whole food and buy free range american raised grass fed, antibiotic free, cruelty free, organic food.

on the other end of the spectrum we have people who don't know how to order at a pizza place....gotta go to the promotions and clip a coupon first.

We buy all of our groceries at the local supermarket, with exception of meats and fish. Those we get monthly at either Earth Fare, Whole Foods Market, or The Fresh Market - which is a bit more expensive but much higher quality.
Why am I not surprised by this post? The first thing that comes to mind though is you are one of the few people I know that own a Ferrari.

To answer OP's question. My boys are both adults now and no longer live at home. I don't eat dinner. I grocery shop maybe every 2-3 weeks. List usually consists of lots of chicken and steak, pre-packaged salads, whey protein, protein bars, toiletries and cleaning supplies. If the bill is over $100 it's because I splurged on something. I may get takeout for lunch 2-3 times a week but mostly cook the night before so I can eat while I work. (aka bimmerpost) As for a total dollar amount I haven't a clue; rough estimate would be maybe $700ish/monthly and that includes restaurant meals where I'm buying dinner for the girlfriend.

I know a lot of families that don’t earn that much, and they all eat. Some do hunt and fish to supplement, most also have chickens and a garden (the real kind, not a city garden).

As a financial person, I too once kept detailed records of the sort RunSilent was able to post. I did it for the first year I was independent, tracking every penny I spent and summarizing monthly. I’ve maintained an awareness of what I spend (but no longer an accurate detail), and a close eye on my bank accounts ever since. That exercise proved so useful that I recommend it to newlyweds and newly independent folks. Those that do it are surprised to see how much they spend, and pretty quickly get control of it. Eating out (Chipotle!), movies, games, streaming, cell phones. The stuff adds up real fast!

Since I joked about alcohol being on the list, let me add that having been very close to a real alcoholic and some other very heavy drinkers, I have become a very infrequent drinker and never to the point of a buzz any more (I actually like the taste of bourbon and scotch, both neat). Alcohol abuse is no laughing matter and addiction is incredibly difficult to break. So my apologies to anyone struggling with that.

OP, I lived in LA for 3-4 years and I didn't know anyone who had a modest home with a mortgage of only $1,250/month nor did I ever see one.

Even just a 1,400 sq. feet house is $500,000 +. Unless you put down 60%.

I can relate with this. I used to drink and party quite often until I was married to someone with a substance abuse problem. It wasn't any one particular substance, she just had to have something all the time; and to the point where it wasn't fun for her or anyone around her. It was really sad and extremely difficult to be married to and care for her. It truly made me not want to drink anymore. I'll drink casually on occasion with friends but I couldn't tell you the last time I was drunk. Financially speaking, it seems like a waste to spend the money only to feel like shit the next day.

My oldest is 12.

" I mean I get you cook with store bought carrots and potatoes at times, but you do realise we have the ability to taste and its cruel you make us suffer through meals that are not as tasty as we've learned to expect".

I made mine to eat fast food for a week because I was painting our house. Maybe they'll be more willing to water my garden from now on.

I count all pennies even, and since in Europe the groceries go bad in a week, I plan each meal so I can do them as cheaply as possible.i enjoy it. I love making the calculations and when my kids will be poor students, they'll appreciate the skill of knowing how to plan a week worth of meals.

I'm shopping for a family of 2+4+2+1+1 (two adults four kids, a dog and a huge rabbit, one elderly dog, and one elderly aunt). It isn't that I couldn't spend more, I can. I just really enjoy the planning and preparing meals.
