Groaning sound from right front

Hello,

I have had the x1 35i for about 10 days now- 2015 30k miles- and it has been up and down. The car drives well mostly with good power. The road noise level is pretty high though even after an alignment.

Couple days ago, I noticed groaning sound from right front area ONLY making left turns and when engine is fully warmed up. What could this be? Power steering pump?

Thanks

BK

I wouldn't think steering rack or pump unless it also occurs at a stand still. Are the tires stock size? If not maybe there's rubbing against the wheel well liner. Brake splash shield can sometimes make contact with rotor but that's usually not just with turning. You might want to take the wheel off and look to see if anything's amiss, like axle boots, strut, etc.

I had a problem on mine where the oil filter housing/cooler lines would just touch the back of the right headlight housing, causing a groaning/buzzing sound. Right where the rubber lines curve downwards towards the cooler, they enter a metal manifold/tubing piece. It was this piece that was touching the headlight housing IIRC. Dealership took the soft side of Velcro and wrapped it... . I notice they did the same thing for the back of the front seat belt anchors, where the plastic might smack the center console.

Some of these tires like run flats can be very noisy on some types of pavement.

To test that, find some good pavement that's not noisy.

Read Tirerack.com to find less noisy tires next time.

I put Michelin PS4S on which are great and minimal noise, but if you drive in winter you might need some other model of tire.
