Golf Clubs?

I've just started to play some golf and want/need to get a set of my own clubs. I'm looking for something I can buy that's a decent complete set that I can learn with, but that is also good enough to keep for at least a couple years. I don't have a particular price in mind, but I'm not interested in being gouged for the "latest and greatest" of the golf name brands. Also, I need clubs with the 1.5 additional inches.

Between store shopping and online research I've come across a few possibilities:

1. Learnaboutgolf.com suggests a set of clone clubs from pinemeadowgolf.com called Command (totals 12 clubs). Pinemeadow has a couple other sets of clone clubs that I was looking at too and seems to get a lot of good reviews across the board. I'd be spending probably in the ballpark of $425-450 without a bag. Apparently no price increase for longer clubs.

2. Dicks Sporting Goods has a Maxfli "Black Max" complete set (18 clubs) for $399 including a bag. Extending the clubs will cost me about $100. Hard to find reviews, but they seem to be generally positive. Brand used to be owned by Taylor Made, but sold to Dicks, fwiw.

3. Adams Tight Lies complete set (18 clubs) for as low as $359.99 online. Would have to go somewhere to get the extra length. Hard to find reviews also, but the ones I've found are all positive, some borderline fanatical. I seem to recall that this is also a lesser name of a big brand. In the negative column, the bag that comes with this set would be embarassing to carry around because it says "Tight Lies" in huge letters on the side. I don't even know what it means, but I already feel awkward.

Anyone know anything about these clubs? Anyone have suggestions or other options that I should consider? Will any of this thought even matter considering the class of clubs I'm looking at?

Thanks in advance.

You may want to look at a last years clubs at a golf shop. You should get a good deal and better quality that clone clubs. Or look for a used set of 2-3 year old cavity backs.

As a long time golfer I might try this if I were you. And you do not want to drop some large coin...

If you feel you are going to stick with it: Go to A large store such as GolfSmith. Go to the used rack. Try different clubs in the demo cage. You can monitor distance etc. Plus the biggest thing to me, FEEL. Those clubs you listed are OK but you will tire of them quickly. A good brand name..Taylor Made, Ping, Callaway etc is where you will eventually end up. They can extended the clubs just like all mine are and correct the lie. If you lengthen you have to adjust the lie or you will have a set of crap.

If it is just a whim: Buy anything...get a better set later.

If you plan on being serious about this, get yourself a nice set of Callaway irons and go from there. FT i-brid Irons FTW.

....1.5"s is quite a lot. How tall are you? I am 6'2" and only did 1/2". You may be standing too "tall" at address to think you need that much.

If so...you will need serious lie adjustment on every club but the putter or you will be doing some serious toe digging.

Agree. Make sure you have a professional fit you for clubs to make sure you get the right length shafts and the correct lie angle. Unless you're 6' 5" or so with short arms I doubt you'll need that much extra length.

Thanks, Mike.

I'm 6'7". I think my arms are pretty average for my height. I was measured by a golf guy in Dicks. I'm not sure he qualifies as a "professional" though.

I just googled what the "lie angle" is and now understand the concept. To get that correct do I have to go custom from the beginning, or can someone alter clubs after the fact to get it right?

If you are just picking up the sport, and dont want to pay alot of $, used clubs FTW.

Check online, theres alot out there.

I picked up a set of used Cobra irons about 4 years ago, and they were as good on Saturday as they were the first time I picked them up- have not let me down yet!

They can adjust the lie anytime..but. You are TALL so be careful. There is only so much you can bend. Dick's guy was probably a decent sales guy. Go to the fitting area?? Wait..Dicks is all kinds of stuff. Try and find a GolfSmith. Those guys live golf. Edwin Watts?

Again. Try hitting first if you can. At 6'2" I have arms like a monkey.

Thanks for your help. I tried to go one better than a golf store.

I just called up a local golf academy that runs through my county's public courses and does custom fitting, sales, lessons, etc. I'm going to go this Wednesday night and they'll help measure and fit me with clubs for free. I also signed up for a $20, hour-long course right after that on the "Fundamentals of the Golf Swing."

Hopefully this will get me started in the right direction.

i'm only 5'10" and it's hard for me to keep my average length limbs all moving in the right direction. i can't imagine being 6'7" and having to do that...good luck

I think this is the game where my height finally comes back to bite me, so thanks for the luck!

i actually got a set of tight lies USED and they work great!!!

i would recommend buying used for sure!

tight lies you can find on ebay for >$70 for 3-PW set
*******edit***********

based on what you've said, and like many hobbies and sports, you will buy another set of clubs for sure!

i would recommend buying a used set thats a liitle longer, because of ur height from ebay, i personally like Adams Tight Lies as those were my first set and they were cheap...

For under $300, I bought an Adams Tigt Lies set (used), a (used) adams driver, nike putter and new nike bag!!!!

you'll be all set!!!

oh yeah...i forgot to mention i'm a nike whore too. i've got the 2nd gen slingshots and love them.

honestly, i probably wouldn't spend too much money on your first set. just get something that works for you and feels right and get yourself more familiar w/ the game. undoubtedly WHEN you get better, you'll invest in a new set of clubs.

that's what happened to me anyway. my first set was like $150 irons/woods/driver/bag all included and worked just fine for my first year or so. my current set prob cost me around $1000

same with balls...don't be dumping money into pro v1's or anything. at $4/ball that gets costly. maxfli noodles are nice cheap balls to lose

just my 2 cents

I am 6'5" and all my irons (Callaway X-20 4-LW) and my X-Hybrid 3 (21 degrees) are 1" long w/ the face turned 2 degrees up(in). My driver is a stock stiff shaft Callaway Ft-5 Driver, and I use an 35" Odyssey White Hot Tour #1 putter. Go to the golf store near you and hit some different sets of irons from different manufacturers (Callaway,Ping, Taylor Made, etc) and decide for yourself based on how they feel in your hands. I'm obviously partial towards Callaway btw.

I agree about gettting a used set and see if the game is for you. Spend $100 on 2-3 lessons and get the basics settled, grip, setup, and some basic swing/hip rotation stuff.

Golf is a long term sport and improvement comes slowly but it will happen if you make an effort to improve.

If you enjoy it and get out you can alwys spend more $$$. Golf is great for buying toys

I've been golfing for 25 years, it is a sport that you can play for a lifetime.

Go with PING. There are the only company it seems thats fully commited to making great clubs, abiet at the expense of creating a wider marketshare, as whats the case with Nike and Callaway. Yes you pay for it, but the clubs are just awesome. I absolutely LOVE my Ping clubs. $500-$1000 can get you a great set. Not incredible, but damn good for even a seasoned/expert golfer.

get something cheap, not walmart cheap but anything under $500 just to get you started in this game.
why?
1) you just started playing and you will not know the difference from a $500 set vs a $2000 set
2) within 1-2 years, you gonna upgrade your clubs to the style of your swing anyways

its all about the swing...if you have the right swing...any club will do
but when you have the right club that fits your style, swing...etc. it adds accurancy and distance.
