What's weird is how the hospital where I did my medical school was so different. It was one of the largest hospitals in the country and there was a lot of accountability.

But the work culture here is a shock for me. I don't understand how one can blatantly yell at Residents and call them names. It's 2nd grade playground behavior and everybody just puts up with it. If you give any sass back you'll get labeled the bad guy.

I think I'm just getting hit by the reality stick. Shits definitely worse in corporate America. At least after Residency nobody can really bully you, besides insurance companies and politicians.

I like my job... it's tough and demanding at times but this company does seem to care about its people...

Overall though; there is still corporate bullshit there but that exists everywhere and there are always changes happening... Generally speaking corporations dont care about people and positions are not stable. My honest advice with the economy being so good... get out and switch if you don't like your position; there will not be a better time within the next 5-10 years.

I absolutely abhored my last company, got shafted out of my bonus and was shown exactly zero respect or care by the management... they felt they owed me nothing to which I agreed 100% and left a few weeks later lol... it ended up being a 35% pay increase at another job, much better benefits and much friendlier people... the people that stayed that are imho idiots that are still suffering to this day... especially after I advised them and literally told them what to do... I almost don't feel bad for them.

I'm thankful every day that even when the pressure is really on at my job, it's not actually that serious. I often remind my team, and also myself, that even if we completely screw something up at our job, nobody will die.

Wasn't always this way for me - while nothing close to being in the medical field, I've worked in large facilities and event management where we have to plan for everything. We did have people die on our watch, and the second guessing around what if our call protocol was different or what if we'd set a different egress plan or what if what if what if was the most terrible part, even if we knew in our brains that everything we planned and did was as it should have been.

I'm glad now that if I just crap the bed with something I'm working on, worst case is maybe we lose that deal and everyone just moves on to the next one.

Before I started doing anything past being a student i'd always hear "people dont quit jobs, they quit bosses"

The company im interning at now has extended an offer. They are also giving me a $2k bonus if I sign before the career fair - I'm considering asking for a bigger bonus and/or straight up telling them i'll take it so long as I don't work with my current PM...

Two grand really isn't enticing to put up with this person full time. Not at all.

Yeah I've thought about this a lot recently. The decisions I make, whether I put in X order or Y order, whether I have the balls to call that mean attending to ask a question, etc. all make a huge impact on peoples' lives. We do some procedures too like central lines where I'm sticking needles and wires into somebody's jugular vein. Other times people code and I do compressions, check their pulse to determine whether to continue CPR or not, etc. Sometimes I have to do a death exam right in front of the family. Crazy stuff to most people but most days I'm doing all of this. Lot of stuff you better get right 100% of the time, and there's no way you're going to be 100% your entire career let alone your first month of Residency.

So had some things of interest happen this week. We had one of our VP's at work put their notice in this past Monday. I've worked with the guy for 21 years through 2 companies. I knew he was leaving as he confided in me, but already had what's listed below in the works.

I left a nice 5 page report with my boss (President) Thursday morning with a summary of how I am technically next in line with salary surveys and supporting data......but I took a neutral stance in all of it. Really I was at a point where I could gI've a fu@k. Plus I was leaving at noon for vacation.

The VP that is leaving and I have virtually turned the company around in the last 6-8 year's. I implemented an idea/process about 5 years ago that's saved the company slightly over $200K a year since it was put in place. Also I'm working on a project that has saved the company about $23K per month since the start of it 5 months ago. And it isn't even in my department. It has to do with Wastewater treatment which is our EH&S managers job although he does just enough to get by.

He (President) called me almost every 30 minutes Thursday checking on m. He heard through the "grapevine" I had two job offers out of the Blue in the last 9-10 days, although he didn't let on he knew. The VP walking out the door told him that unless he did something, he would probably lose me. He was VP of technology while I'm a lowly plant engineering manager. Plus one of the job offers is with the VP. It's back at a place we worked at in the past before the company sold.

He said he wants to discuss my future with the company when I get back and that the owner was flying up in his private jet to meet with me.

However if they did the right thing, it does mean a 30%+ salary increase and restructured bonus program. But I'm the type that feels like things happen when they are supposed to...so I'm just going to enjoy my vacation.

Whatever happens....happens!

Although, I am tired of sales, my main current issue is the company I work for & the idiots that run it. They seem to have NFC & I'm underpaid

I guess I am happy overall but there are some things that annoy me. I started at the company packing boxes, then pulling orders, then made it into our retail store, and eventually started running the store. I was stuck there for about 5 years working every other Saturday, and I wanted a change. So I talked to another department head in our California branch and he basically made a position for me. Now I am a Product support specialist, and Trade show manager. I've been doing that for a little over a year. I answer tech questions about our products, do some light customer service, and organize and prepare for Airventure and Sun and Fun.

85% of it is good, but recently they have made some changes and they are trying to get me to work one Saturday a month in the retail store, which I do not want to do. The only other issue is the office manager is always in my business. She thinks that shes my boss but I actually report to her boss and my boss in the California office.

I'm a project manager in tech right now. Making the transition to product manager currently, but been debating on jumping over to sales or marketing. As part of volunteering I've been organizing and planning a bunch of charity events and such and I've found that I enjoy the socializing a hell of a lot more than my current day to day grind - and I'm better at it than most. The social aspects mean that I'm excited to see emails in my inbox instead of dreading the next list of defects to pass on to my QA team or something. The stakeholders, customers, etc I deal with through the volunteering are just on an astronomically different level in every regard compared to the software my team builds / maintains.

We'll see where I end up over the next few months - I randomly and coincidentally had 4 major companies reach out to me cold via Linkedin in the same 2-week time period so I started entertaining recruiter asks to apply for certain positions. I figure it never hurts to practice interviewing if nothing else, and at least 2 of the positions would be a significant bump in salary (~40%+ increase in base salary, though once you factor in bonus and stocks it'd only be about a 20% increase). One of the positions would be potentially a 200% increase in salary. Any of you in tech in the bay area can probably guess which company that is.

From a guy that just turned 50 and who has worked as everything from a grocery bagger (15) to a VP of Sales and Marketing - money is not everything. Waking up in the morning not dreading your job is worth a LOT of money.

I left my favorite job I have ever had at the end of 2017. The President who had personally hired me had retired 4-5 years before and the person that took his spot, who I always knew would, was terrible. Every trait you hate in a boss. He knew I was good at my job and he knew the owners (private company) loved me, but they were out of state. That tied his hands, but it was still not pleasant. The first few years under him were not terrible, but I knew they would get worse and they did.

Company was stagnate, but very profitable for 13 years before I arrived. The VP of production and I were exactly eye to eye on things and we started killing it and had quadrupled the total sales in 7 years. Best team environment I have ever worked in. I worked insane hours and loved every minute of it - I lived there. But the last 2 years were horrible. Worst of all, I became a shitty employee. I dreaded work and Sunday by noon I started dreading going to work.

Late 2018 after 50 years of ownership the owners decided to sell (all in their mid-80's) and a public company snapped us up. They assigned a new president over the parent company that over saw all the companies owned by them. The first meeting I had with him I knew I was done. He was just like my ahole boss on steroids. I wrote my resignation letter that weekend, finished out the year and left.

The night after I turned in my notice I slept like I had not in 2 years. It was amazing. I didn't even have another job lined up - just a rough plan to enjoy my summer and relocate and find something I enjoyed.

When word got out I turned in my notice, I got another offer. The salary was less, but the bonus was uncapped. I even asked if they really wanted to do that, but they still went ahead. It is a smaller private company where I am the rock star (not because I am so great, but because they were not to that level yet) and the pressure is almost nonexistent compared to my last job. I am home by 7 at the latest and work about 5-6 weekends a year at most and I could not be happier. Even people I have known for years remark about how happy I am now. And with that uncapped bonus - I barely took a cut after my first year of learning the product range. Still have many of my same customers too.

Money does not equal happiness - happiness equals happiness. You can learn to live with less, but you can't learn to be happy when you are miserable. Might be easier to say from someone like me who has always been a saver and do not have kids to feed, but when you are on your deathbed - will you be thinking about how big your bank account is or how many things made you smile every day?

#behappy

Hmm this one is tough for me as I like my boss and team (probably the best I have ever had which is very hard to find). Been in current role for 3 years and while the company is great and the role is good, I’m getting a bit bored as I’m not learning as much anymore. I’m somewhat on autopilot now. Talked with boss and because our org is so flat it would be hard for me to get management experience managing others that are older than me. Also would like to go to sales or BD roles as I have done some sales roles in the past and really enjoyed it. I go back and forth on this a lot. I organize and plan various events for different clubs/groups and really like that as well. Not sure what I should do at this point since I am not unhappy but also not very happy either.

Old thread but I'll jump in. Union Plumber/pipe welder in Jersey City for the past 28yrs. Loved my job,and the fact if at any time the foreman pissed me off or if job conditions/commute sucked I'd simply say,"get my money,I'm out!" or a big "F*** YOU I quit!!" depending on the situation, and go on to a different job. This only works if you're at the top of your game otherwise you'll sit on the out-of-work list for some time. I always worked steady.

Just retired at 50yrs old and received my 1st pension and annuity check last month(and picked up a 2020 M550i as a retirement present to myself). I miss the camaraderie and the fun on the jobsite that you just can't have in an office environment unless you wanna have HR on your back lol.

Y'all have a good day at work,I'll be thinking about ya as I'm chillin in my mancave turning wrenches on the toys

I just retired myself after 25 years in active duty. Was trying to do the stay at home dad and let the wife bring the dough but after 3 months of doing it, I can't. I need to find something to do. I miss the ability to interact with others and staying busy.

Same here, wife has a very lucrative career and I've played Mr. Mom for a long time. Kid is off to college in August,we'll be moving to NC and I'll literally have nothing to do and won't know anyone. Guess I'll occupy all my free time at one of the dozens of drag strips in North Carolina

Haha! This will feel minor once you experience the real bullying after you start practicing (patients, bosses, hospitals, referring MDs and if you have the misfortune of getting sued, lawyers). Not sure what program you are currently in. One of the programs I was at was very malignant but was/is the best to learn procedural skills in that field. Curiously, in practice, I have found I learnt the most useful stuff from the guy who was the most malignant to work with.

I currently work for an investment bank in New York City. Been on Wall Street for 20 years. Last 9 have been at my current bank.
Perks are good. I work from home when I want...workload isn’t terrible. Can come and go as I please. Pay is good....bonuses average anywhere between 20-30%. So in that area I cannot complain

Abt 5 years ago my boss brought on a new person into the group. I questioned the move as this person had no experience (internal transfer) but was assured they fit the bill as It was a junior role and we could get them trained. I tried my best to train this person...and I feel I did a good job. It was during that time that I knew this person was better suited for a “widget punching” type of role. Our group is more analytical and requires critical thinking. I expressed my concerns at the 1 year mark. I was told to keep at it and things were fine. This person is a good brown noser.... and is the office socialite. More concerned about making friends than learning their job.
It got to the point where I was doing my job and theirs... always having to explain the same shit day in and day out. Pointing out errors...and trying to educate them. They were more concerned about texting their friends. You see where this is going.
I grew increasingly frustrated and withdrawn to the point where it impacted my relationship with my manager. I would bring it up in convo and was met with “well at this point they just aren’t gonna Get it....but what do u want me to do....”
so this is what have to deal with. The perks are great....I get a lot of work life balance... but dang it’s stressful having to deal with a dimwit.....

Worked with a guy like that before. He was a member in our group. Big talk but can’t back it up and was terrible at his job. He ended up getting fired a year or so after I left (might have been 6 months). Things will catch up sooner or later.

^^^^^ THIS!!!

My wife's job has a new social butterfly employee that came in on day one last year bragging about how she never did her own work in school, and was fired from a state job for not logging onto her computer all day.

No surprise, she flutters around the office 6 hours a day distracting everyone else, demands special attention as a vegan, is a protected class as a lesbian, and is BFF with the supervisor who sees none of this (or that she wears sweatpants to work in a professional office every day) and only wants to put her in for promotions despite not even logging onto her computer once on most days. Oh, did I mention that she blew through her entire 2020 vacation/sick benefits time allocation by the first week of February, and is now begging the supervisor to find out what the company's Cornavirus quarantine emergency pay plans are because she went to Asia in January and has a Farcebook picture online kissing monkeys?

When she does turn on her computer, she screws up every file she touches. Since her BFF supervisor thinks that she can do no wrong, every other person in the office gets blamed because the software they use only has file-level and not record-level auditing and they were the last to touch the screwed-up files. Their company is about to lose the contract, and my DW along with the others will all be unemployed any day now because of this one unemployable slacker.....
