The general consensus is that it's his car and he's free to do what he wants but that an aftermarket tune and factory package do not an M car make. Also, that he should not be surprised if people give him crap over it. I don't see how that is hating on the OP.
The badge, as with AMG/SVT/SRT/etc..., means more to the subset of auto enthusiasts who respect the heritage and meaning behind it. To them/us, it means more than just a tuned car (factory or aftermarket) that came from the factory with a few M-tech bits that had badges. A car that came from BMW with a few bits originating from the Motorsport division is much different than a car that was actually worked over by the Motorsport division. Some people gravitate towards these badges because they mean something (or they want to look cool) but that meaning may only be superficial and lack the meaning behind it. I came into this thread griping about the Sport Line lacking anything tangible to put the 'Sport' in 'Sport Line' aside from the bolstered front seats .

While we are ranting. Why is there even an X5 and X6 ///M? Do these owners track their vehicles? ///M and AMG have become status symbols. I see so many falsy badged M and AMGs here in SoCal it's laughable. I love BMWs but I hate the negative connotations that come along with owning them. Many BMW drivers are pompous, arrogant jerks.

My assumption is because Porsche came out with the Cayenne.
For the record, while there are a lot of DB BMW (and MB) drivers, I find that there are a LOT of Infinity drivers that are just as bad, if not worse. Especially their M line owners/drivers.

Another idea is to start a trend that if you've customized the car using a new badge that's not the ///M.
///C ///K ///E But I also think BMW has watered down and half ruined the M branding because they're willing to label almost all models as M'ish when they aren't, and people don't want to admit their X5M or X1 M line aren't a real M at all. True M cars are 50%-30% or less of the same parts as the original car. The fact you can get factory M labeling on an X1 and other models that are mostly all cosmetic is pretty stupid considering they really don't fit in even the same ball park for changes and improvements for true M cars. The M package on the X1 is basically all cosmetic and no real M guts because there are no part differences (wheels and seats don't affect handling imo) and only 1 software change that gives you more rear biast on acceleration through corners between a small range like 29mph and 57mph, though I don't recall the exact numbers'. If BMW is willing to put an M steering wheel and M labeling all over the inside and foot wells I see _very_ little difference in someone putting the ///M badge on the outside. I also think that if someone does modify a bmw for performance improvements, to me it's more worthy of an ///M badge than an X1 is of having any M labeling anywhere when it's all cosmetic. I mainly blame BMW, not the OP, for the interest in M package labeling and badging on models that don't deserve the badge in the first place. I understand they do it to make more money but I wonder if they'll stop before most enthusiests start saying BMW's are poser performance cars and are all badging and not real peformance, like Audi started doing and hurt their own brand (from the Original TT to even the new RS-Q3 that has the same 0-60 as the X1 xDrive35i). Many people think the newer BMW F chasis performance is not as good as the E92 and E46. Also the Nissan GTR beats all M cars in almost all areas and is less expensive than most M models. Some of the numbers gaps the GTR pulls compared to M's is shamful. Anyway, I hope people posting that the OP shouldn't put an M badge are also e-mailing BMW and complaining about M labeling on the X1 and other models that aren't true M cars. If I saw a ///M on an X1 I'd be interested what he's done to make it ///M worthy as I think it's possible people can make an X1 worthy of the badge with a lot of work. If someone ///M badges an X1 and did no real performance upgrades I'd think he's the BMW fanboy they seem to want to attract lately with M package labeling for their cars. If BMW, puts badges on its cars, it may water down what M badges mean but it is being done for profit. If an individual adds a badge, its being done for some need to communicate something to other people. I suppose some might think that if you modify the suspension of an x1 but keep it a little softer than a true M might, you could put an AMG badge on. And if you modify a real M, you could put an Mplus badge on. As far as x5m's go, what would you like owners to do...hang signs on their cars that say " this car is not a real m"? I gotta tell you, a 555 HP suv that stops on a dime, carries most any cargo and handles better than most cars, is pretty impressive. Do a mod and it goes to 650 HP. It doesnt matter whether it handles as well as an M3 on the track. It's still impressive.

The local race track won't allow SUV/CUVs on the track, M or AMG or not.

If BMW asks for my opinion, I'll certainly tell them, but I find it rude for me to do so unless they ask. It's their business (both literally and figuratively), and I hold no voting stock in BMW. |

I would vote no on the ///M badge. There is no X1M
OP - what kind of 1/4 mile times are you running with your mod'd X1 ?

I ran a 12.92 with JB4 on 93 octane. Expecting 12.7-12.8 with e85. The only time I went with e85 I had it on the wrong setting and ran a 13.43 while trapping only 84mph due to misfiring and losing power halfway down the track.

Bottom line, it's not an M factory car. It came from the factory as an X1 and through the miracle of badging, it's wearing a M badge. And whether you buy various M components and add it to the car, it's still an X1 with modified components but not an M factory car.
I have no idea why people do this... be proud of the version you bought |

100% agreed that there's no X1M, but if there is an "M" factory package with the "M" logo on selected locations on the vehicle, why not add another "M" logo to the package anywhere the owner prefers, now...if the vehicle has no factory "M" package and you add an "M" logo that's complete joke and I won't recommend doing it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M
M-Cars vs. M-badged cars There are several BMW models which BMW Motorsport made changes on, without them becoming M-Cars. This succession of styling (M-tech I, M-tech II) and performance cues came from BMW Motorsports; e.g. BMW 530i M packet or 325i M packet etc. Vehicles which have been modified by BMW Motorsport, but are not full M Cars, may feature "M" badges, whilst full M Cars will have "M" badges with the model number (e.g. "M3" or "M5"). Two exceptions would be the M Roadster and M Coupe models, both Z3, Z4 and 1-series variants, which only have an "M" badge with no number displayed on the trunk. These cars are full M Cars. In recent years, there have been M-badged accessories available on non-M cars, usually as factory options or as part of the "M Sport" package (which is usually more expensive than the regular Sport package). Examples of this include the E39 and E60 5 series sedans had optional aerodynamic packages strongly influenced by M5 styling (for example bumpers with larger intakes). It is not unusual to see "standard" BMW's with "M" badges or ribbons accenting the design. The plain motorsports Badge simply stands for M-tech upgrades on the car, suspension, brakes, looks or any other mod that has been developed by the ///M division. So therefore the ///M badge should not under any circumstances be compared to the ///M+number badge (except the Z-cars, as mentioned), as they are not fully fledged M-cars, just M-equipped. BMW has for example, had these ///M options on the regular cars since the late 1970s, which explains why some cars that carry these ///M-badges from factory. An example of M-badged vehicles in recent times includes the E60 BMW 550i and E63 BMW 650i; while the regular BMW 5 Series and 6 Series only had a choice of manual or automatic transmissions, but the M Sport package had an optional Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) until after the 2007 model year, a gearbox shared with the M5 and M6.[23]
