I completely agree on the throttle lag being annoying, mostly because that's not the case in all BMWs.
But keep in mind that the car doesn't have a traditional throttle body and that the intake and exhaust strokes (and hence the power coming out of the engine) are determined by VANOS, which is completely computer controlled. |

I am positive that the lag is transmission related.
In manual mode, lag is completely gone. I am now driving exclusively in manual mode. |

I think it's intentional by design. BMW engineers probably program it in the throttle mapping to increase CAFE numbers. I can see it saving a little gas, even if it makes the owner blow a gasket.

I didn't even consider buy a car with an n20...my best friend is a BMW tech and has pointed out that the n20 likes to granade around 60k miles when the timing chain stretches
The n55 has been great so far |

These days, the first thing I do when getting into the car in good conditions is turning off the TC. I feel much safer that way. The other major irritation, traction-wise, is that there's no way to put it in N from manual mode. I wish hitting both paddles at the same time would have "clutched", but alas, not so. If in M mode and the tires slip on ice, I want to be able to drop all engine coupling until steering is controlled again. |

I drove manual cars all my life, so using the shifter is no effort. Force yourself to use only manual shift for 1 tank of gas. You will not go back 😉 |

I was always under the impression continual use of manual shifting of automatic transmissions was one of the worst things you could to them in terms of longevity/reliability.

The transmission does not know or care who told it to do what. Maybe I over simplified it, the switch still tells the computer to tell the transmission to change. Maybe in your dads Valiant 😀 Last edited by Njerts; 09-02-2016 at 11:04 AM.. |

There was a massive recall on the timing chain and components because they develop slack causing the chain to skip teeth on the vanos hub wiping out the valves and scaring the pistons...this forum me might represent .125% of the bmws with the n20/n26 on the road so it isn't surprising that you haven't heard it on this forum...granade may be an overstatement but it's not entirely inaccurate

I can't find the actual recall notice. Seems like the '12 and '13 model years were affected and then there was a redesign ? I wouldn't use that as a reason to avoid an N20 equipped car. Just find one that was serviced properly and updated |
