But I'm on auto and driving in almost bumper to bumper Singapore it's a pain to switch to manual. How does one change gear on auto at 2000rpm? I'd do the "drive like an egg". |

Difficult in a auto, you have to use the manual. I would not worry too much about running it in below 3000rpm. Used to be true for old cars but modern car's tolerances are much higher. Just don't thrash it. Interestingly, my dealer told me its more for the tyres. Running the car smoothly for the first 500miles or so beds them in and rmoves the slippery film on the tread.

On-board computer ? Sure you are not reading the real-time consumption ?
Try measuring it on your own, as someone wrote earlier : fill up your tank, write down the odometer reading, drive until next fuel-up, fill up again, write down the quantity of gas you just filled, and the odometer reading again. Which will leave you with the exact distance covered (from the two odometer readings) and a matching gasoline amount. To simplify, it should give you something like : 500 kms covered for 50 Liters burnt. To determine the value for 100 kms : (50 x 100) : 500 = 10 In my oversimplified example, you get 10L/100 kms.

Yeah, as I've only managed 500km I'm on my second fuel-up. Will 'report' back with details when I do get to measure that. Thanks! |

My figure was all wrong until I realised it was showing usage from when the car had 0 miles on the clock, ie very heavy.

melts - the spec says your X1 has a 63 liter tank, so 500km off 63l is much better than17l/100km i.e. 12.6l/100km!. So if you watch your revs a *bit* or avoid Sport mode you'll do better

55.378 liters for 366 km. That means = 6.6 km per liter or 15.1 liters per 100 km Looks pretty excessive to me considering not much revs nor sports mode. |

melts - it was a dilemma for me as well when I ordered my car. My calculations now tell me that I would have covered the extra cost of the diesel in about 5 years or less. I'm beginning to think I should have got the diesel, and cut down on the options. Mandatory options for me were Auto and Panorama roof.
I'll be getting my car anyday now, so will check my consumption for a month or so. If it's excessive I'll have to consider a trade-in for a used diesel. But I do about 60% highway and 40% city, and can improve it if I get up a bit earlier in the mornings to avoid traffic |

Just for interest I have been doing a lot of very short trips since my last refill and as an experiment I have been driving it in "Sport" on the auto box. In addition I have been pushing it a bit as well.
So far my consumption has only dropped down to 36.7mpg (7.7 l/100km). Not bad considering I have been having a lot of fun at the same time
