Crap like that makes me glad my service adviser is a good guy. Did you eventually get it recoded (free of charge)? Thanks and thanks for looking! It's been a while since I've been able to get out with my camera, though. People still give me crap for the rolling bike and Jeep shots.

My last tank of pure highway driving, at 75 mph, netted 30 mpg. I calculate that for the EPA city cycle, I should get about 21 mpg. Not quite the 22 mpg advertised, but close. By the way, I have found that for my car, the computer avg mpg is about 0.5 mpg optimistic, compared to a manual calculation. |

That makes some sense. Wished the Germans could write manuals as well as their engineers can make products.

Now that I knew, and I see how that would be disappointing. Well, at least for those of us who sometimes want to do some "harder" driving. Knowing that the engine is warm enough is rather useful, and I'm glad I have the oil temp instead of mpg. Now if I could have had a coolant meter and voltage display too, even if buried deep down in the iDrive... |

I made a trip from Corpus Christi to San Antonio Friday afternoon. San Antonio's altitude is about 235 meters, whereas, obviously CC is close to sea level, so 770 feet over more than 100 miles isn't exactly a hard climb. Winds were from the north, at about 15 MPH with gusts no more than 20. My trip computer told me I averaged 26 MPG going to San An, and I reset it before coming home, and it averaged 32 MPG going back to CC. I averaged 80MPH and used the cruise control as much as possible both ways.
To draw any conclusions, I'd need to make the trip again in with a south wind (that will probably happen soon enough) to compare the results. If I get a direct inverse, than we can conclude that the aerodynamics are more significant than the elevation change. I suspect the hills are significant though, as the X1 no more light than it is slick. Last edited by annoyingmouse; 06-10-2013 at 03:05 PM.. |

I'm at about 600 miles so far and am averaging approx 30 mpg city on eco drive. I hardly ever drive on the highway. There is definitely a "breaking in period" with this car for both gas mileage and performance. It keeps getting better and better. LOVE my X1!

My 35i milage is way worse than expected. I get the same milage in my SS Camaro and it is way more fun to drive. Been parking the 35i and taking the camaro instead. Big mistake going BMW... This is the first and last I will ever own.

Thanks for your helpfull insight, no mention of what your mileage is, how many miles are on your vehicle or anything. Since when is a SUV supposed to be like driving a Camaro, I'd much rather be driving an M3 since we're comparing apples with oranges.

We just returned from a trip to the Grand Canyon North Rim, about 1100 miles round trip. Checked the mileage the old fashioned way, not the computer, and averaged 31.04 mpg in our s28.

I personally wouldn't own a Camaro if you gave it too me for free, at least Leatherpants was said as sarcasm. I think the new Camaros are ugly as hell with tiny windows you can't even see out of.
Getting back to the point of the thread my wife just drove from Columbia, SC round trip to Cincinnati which was solid hills the entire trip and got 29.0 in a 1049 mile trip. This included some stops for 4 wrecks and some driving around once there.

Look ahead as far as you can on the road and adjust your driving to preserve momentum above all else. Avoid having to regain speed, and don't attempt to maintain an exact speed. Brake early but lightly for red lights, turning cars or other situations you normally would stop for, and you may not have to stop at all. 40->20->40 uses a lot less gas than 40->0->40.
Last tank in my 35i: 25.5 mpg, almost all non-highway traffic with a fair amount of hills and traffic lights. With a N20, I'd almost certainly be above 30. |

Could be car, most likely it's the driver
Gas mileage varies from person to person driving the same car. I have the xdrive 28i and get an average of 26 mixed driving normally (flooring it from time to time). When I drive very carefully on the highway I get 35/36.

Ok, I had my first refill: 50 ltr for 295 km. For our US friends: that is 13.9 mpg. Ouch.
Admitted: this is real city driving in a brand new 28i. Traffic lights at every block. Avg speed 15 mph. And we have no flat terrain here either. However I tried to drive with a very light foot. Seems like it makes no difference. Just researched EPA city cycle, which they say represents urban driving. Fuel Economy Test Schedules Can someone explain me the 60 mph in the beginning and end of the cycle? What are they simulating? Don't know what is typical in USA, but here in Canadian cities the max speed is 50 km/h (31 mph). In rush hour no way you can get to this speed. Last edited by pbodifee; 06-16-2013 at 03:29 AM.. |

What I don't think most estimates take into account is rush hour traffic. I think that instead of three values, there should be a graph with average speed on the X axis, estimated fuel usage on the Y axis, and a shaded area around the resulting average line showing common variation. For most cars, the resulting graph would look like a fat dolphin diving to the left with its snout at (0 mph,0 mpg), a hump in the 40-60 range, and the tail lower near top speed. |
