Seriously trading in my X1 for a bicycle - a fixed gear one with pink rims to match the frame; so other city dwellers can only stare in envy.

I think people are just whining too much and expect too much from their vehicle. As for gas prices, I hope they get ridiculous. They determine my pay check, and since I'm a greedy person, I want a bigger cheque.

Certainly not a niche product for BMW, X1's outsold X3's in May each with over 14,000 units worldwide. I think the X1 will pass the X3 in the US because of the price point being the entry level to get into a BMW. I can certainly see how it could get the EPA numbers especially on the hwy. The several hwy trips we have taken have all been about 30 mpg avg but at substantially higher speeds and not steady speeds or flat. We're only getting about 21.5 city but it depends on what you call true city driving. Our city driving would be mostly 1-3 miles of stop lights and stop signs going with moderate traffic.

10k NA sales thru May on a brand new (to us) vehicle. Not bad but I sure don't see many around, which I like just as with my E82. Right, 30 and your car is rwd with electric steering that I'd bet gets more than 1 better than the awd real world.

Have about 3k miles on my x1 sdrive averaging about 25-29 mpg overall. 40% city 60% highway with some spirit driving.
Based on my experience, I figure out: 1) Eco Pro mode improves efficiency by only 0.5 to 1 mpg at most even if I use it whenever I can. 2) 50% of the time - I ride alone and get 22-30(really depend on how I drive). 40% of the time - I ride with my girlfriend and get 26-29 10% of the time - two more passengers at the back and I get only 24-26 Same driver, similar route and I am a more aggressive driver when I am driving alone. I usually drive slower when there're passengers. So if I am right, every 150 lbs human being will lower the efficiency by about 1 mpg. 3) MPG drops significantly when over 75 mph. I am satisfied (not impressed but satisfied) with the efficiency so far. The EPA result is achievable but you have to really work hard to get that. |

I bet you don't want to.
She just can't stop talking and I have to pay attention to her (you know what gonna happen if I don't) so I can never really concentrate on driving when she's next to me. And she got a lot to say when I go little faster |

I'm driving an X1 2011 Xdrive20d
(has 50,000kms on the clock now) The rated economy for this car is: 7.0L/100kms (33mpg) City 5.1L/100kms (46mpg)Highway I do 80% around town (not heavy traffic at all) and sometimes drive on freeways which are fast flowing. Rarely do stop start, bumper to bumper. I tried lightly and don't accelerate hard to try test the economy. Average consumption has never shown less than 9.3L/100kms by the end of the fuel cycle. (25mpg) The only way I can get it to be lower is be on the freeway then reset the computer then, and it will show about 7-8's but thats cheating.. It will average out back to about 9.3, maybe higher I have NEVER got more than 600kms (372miles) from a tank .. usually about 550kms (340miles) a tank. Now I don't expect to get factory ratings... But very disappointed when A) My last car VW Jetta Diesel which has WORSE economy on factory rating than my X1 managed to do average of 6.5L/100kms (36mpg) each and every fuel cycle. B) When I tested my brothers E90 320i which is a Petrol... it can easily do 9.9L/100kms on same driving roads/style. Thats not much difference from a diesel... and sounds a hell of a lot better. So I wonder if there is something wrong with my car or whether BMW just overstate fuel figures. My next car won't be a diesel if that's the case. I would have to say my X1 has been one of the best looking cars I've bought but the most disappointing to own. (handling and acceleration not as sharp as the test car!) |

It's been mentioned a few times here by various people, but it's not primarily acceleration that kills mileage on a somewhat heavy car like this, but using the brakes. One way to save fuel is to accelerate up to above what you would normally do, and then glide for as long as possible. Try to not hit the gas pedal on inclines, but roll up using the momentum, even if you slow down. Cause it's much cheaper to accelerate down a hill than up one. And avoid braking, especially late braking to a stop, or right before a curve. That's where most people lose fuel.

I understand the extra weight and have tried to roll it as much as possible as you say.. I do accelarte to where I want to be and then go easy from then.. But I got to say I did not have to control my driving style one bit on the VW TDi. No matter how I drove I could get 6.5-6.8L/100kms .. |

Bottom line as I see it:
If you purchased the X1 28i Xdrive thinking you'd easily clear 30mpg highway(reasonable given 33 epa est.) without having to employ any hypermiling techniques, unfortunately you've been misled. Bright side: the car is still pretty damn quick, handles well, is not very light and does get almost CR-V type fuel economy, which as I've said is still very decent for the package.

Thursday I drove from Los Angeles to Danville which is 40 mikes east of San Francisco. After usual LA congestion I took a brief detour to Thousand Oaks then had some slow patches over the Grapevine due to usual interminable road maintenance/construction. Whole trip was just over 400 miles. I drove 75 with EcoPro for most of it. sDrive 28.
Filled tank Friday. Drove 424.6 miles on 13.02 gallons. My calculator tells me that's 32.6 MPG. So I didn't hit 34 but it wasn't pure highway driving either. By the way it was my first time to use Cruise Control and I forgot to review the manual. Found it fairly easy to figure it out on my own but I did reach for the turn signal stalk a couple of times. Not optimal to have those so close but since I personally use CC so rarely, not a biggie. Hopefully will at least match 32.6 on my return trip Monday. |

Monday I returned to Los Angeles from San Francisco/East Bay area in my sDrive28. Used EcoPro on highway and a lot of cruise control at about 75. I decided to stop and fill up a little over halfway home, with over half a tank left.
The pump stopped at 6.25 gallons, and I had done 246 miles at that point. When I got home I picked up the calculator. 39+MPG! BUT - then I had to wonder - did I check to see that the tank was actually full after pumping gas? I didn't. When I first had the car, the first few times I gassed up I would have to make sure I got a fill-up, because sometimes the pump would switch off prematurely. But that's been months, and the X1 always fills up at auto pump shut-off now. But I suppose 39 is unusually high enough to indicate that it must not have been a complete fill up. I won't fill up again for several days. And I am back in LA now, and more "city" driving. But if that next fill-up calculations seem low, that would probably verify that I didn't really fill the tank yesterday. By the way, on my trip computer, my car now has - since purchase - an average speed of just over 35 mph and average of MPG of exactly 28! Coming up on 9000 miles. So happy overall. |

Thought I'd post a couple pics to provide visual proof on my MPG. I suspect others are like me and don't necessarily take everything read here at face value. Especially the "prices paid" threads with the "under invoice and the salesmen gave me his first born child too!" type entries.
So after my first long road trip (about 800 round trip in my sDrive28, a lot of cruisy highway miles), I finally hit the sticker's avg consumption of 28. I am a Los Angeles resident, so I thought I would include avg speed as well. You can see I'm coming up on 9000 miles since purchase. Computer has never been reset. I used cruise control a fair amount on the trip, and I always use EcoPro on freeways. At high speeds I don't feel EcoPro holds me back. I passed one annoying truck (passing an even more annoying truck on a two lane) on my trip and shocked myself by how quickly I went from 65 to over 90. Glad there wasn't a cop around at that moment. So that trip took me from avg MPG of 26.7, where I'd been stuck for quite a while, to 28 on the nose. Now that I am back to my usual LA commute, we'll see how long it stays there... |
