Im now approaching 4000 kms on my 18iDrive and consumption wavers around 12.5lt, averaging about 28km/hr. Its not that far off BMW's figures of 11lt for urban driving. With more conservative driving, and slightly higher average speeds, its probably achievable.
Manicm, i tried manual shifting, and it definitely improves fuel consumption. I have also found the auto transmission to be more settled now than originally. Gear changes are smoother and dont hold on for so long in 1st to 2nd. It probably makes sense for the auto to hold gears a bit longer given the poor power-weight ratio. |

Driving style/habits do play a big part as well, especially in an underpowered car with a heavy body. |

Ok, been on holiday for the past 10 days and because of mainly long distance mileage, and lack of traffic my consumption came down to 8.8l/100km - the lowest ever in 9 months since new. Returned back to work, and now at 9l.

Hi all
I too have a 18i and am very disappointed with its city fuel consumption. Using 95 RON fuel I average around 13l/100km per tank, admittedly with an average speed of about 26 km/h. This wouldn't be so bad if the car had some power! At least now after reading this thread I know it's not just mine. The dealer has checked it twice and not found anything wrong. Overall a very disappointing engine. What's worse is with the recent update they have now ditched this engine and replaced it with the 18d engine for about the same price...... |

13 litre per 100 km is actually not that bad. I have a diesel and if my avg speed is 26km/h I would be lucky to be under 10 litre per 100km.
The problem is the engine is woefully underpowered. Surely you have gone for a test drive? Did you research what the 320i's fuel consumption is using the same engine? Being underpowered also mean you are pushing it all the time just to keep up a reasonable pace and hence detrimental on fuel consumption. When did you get the 18i? |

Yes we took it for a couple of test drives but we bought it when they were first released, so didn't have any real world feedback about fuel consumption. It is my wife's car and she is happy enough. Still a good car in every other respect.
