I spend half the day watching YouTube videos. Luckily I have my own business so I can't fire myself or the company would go under.
I've only worked at one place where I know for a fact they monitored and blocked certain sites. It was one of the best jobs I had when I started there (small startup) and one of the worst by the time I left. They were super draconian. I worked in the marketing department and we basically had to fight to get YouTube access as we produced videos and needed to upload them etc. Luckily I was friends with the IT guy so I had access to everything (although it was still monitored). This place got so bad when we were still in a small building where we rented the entire space. HR would lock the front door at 9am. So if you were even 5min late you would have to knock to have HR come scold you and open the door. The couple times it happened to me I would just call my friend to come open the door. Also one time someone in the company accidentally sent an email containing some attachment with salaries or something confidential (don't remember exactly) and sent it to the whole company. They made us all leave the building while IT went to every single persons computer to delete the email and file. Plus if they somehow noticed you had downloaded the file you got a meeting with HR to ask you why you downloaded the file. That placed was whacked out towards the end. Luckily never had anything like that anywhere else. In fact most my jobs have been super laid back. Maybe because they have been at more creative type companies. I can understand if you are paid to do some kind of labor job or something where you have to actively be working all the time. However in my case it's more like I get paid to do projects. As long as the project is done by the deadline fuck off! When I did more programming stuff sometimes you just don't have the solution to a problem you need to solve. Sitting at your desk in silence staring at the wall will not help you solve the problem. Now if you're suppose to answer the phone or something and people end up waiting on hold because you're surfing FB then that's a problem. |

You would understand why all these measures are necessary once you are in a management position in this age of internet. This is different than micromanagement as some of my past employees would bitch about.

Here's an idea: instead of hiring and retaining people that you need to babysit like a bunch of toddlers, go find some sharp folks with good work ethics. All the bandwidth you were spending babysitting can now be redirected towards the company's mission. Or, if management hired good people but treated them like a bunch of toddlers and that approach created a self-fulfilling prophecy, maybe management needs to take a good look in the mirror.

Everywhere I've worked has "rules" about internet use.
But they dont care if the work is getting done. The problem is, ive also worked with people that would surf the internet all day long regardless of if they were behind or not. If youre productive and making the company money, chances are they arent going to care, but having a "no personal use" clause in their policies makes it easier to bounce the people that are slacking and falling behind. On some of my projects i have instituted no phones can be out except for those in charge (super/foreman/etc) to get guys from being on their phones all day. nothing worse than needing a craine pick or some other piece of equipment and the operator is sitting there on his phone not paying attention.

If they're paying low salaries, they're getting low-quality people. You get what you pay for. Sometimes there can be that rare highly capable and hard-working "ringer" who likes the product, the problem space, the company, or whatever such that he/she will work for less than what they'd earn elsewhere. They don't usually stay around long, though. Once a boss or two figures out how good they are, pretty soon they're being assigned 3 or 4 times as much work as everybody else. Or they're given all the tricky, messy shit to solve or do. Or both. They won't put up with that for long - not for a below-market salary, at least.

If I need to be online, I use my phone (Note 8) probably 90% of the time so that my employer does not know how much time I spend online or where I go. Granted, we are allowed "limited use", and I've personally never had a complaint regarding my use, but I like the anonymity.

All this talk reinforces why I religiously maintain personal equipment. An example is I have two cell phones. One for work and one for personal. Many of my colleagues merge their use where their work provided phone is used for personal. I refuse to do this because of the mindset that has been burned into my head working all those years in the Fed. The Feds can confiscate and go through any personal item you have if it's been used for official business or has touched a government network.
I'm currently and have in the past been provided with a company laptop. Again, I carry my own personal laptop with me to do personal stuff connected to my own personal hot spot and only use my work laptop for work. |

every company ive worked for has always made you sign a deal stating they can have access to your phone 24/7 if needed if you want to use a personal phone instead of getting a company phone. One company even required us to have an app on our phones for remote access. Would be very weird if im watching porn and they remote in. Same with laptops, but who uses a laptop for porn anymore anyway.

The most draconian place I've ever worked was the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis. Very high security overall, and especially in the sector where I worked. I had signed off on all the rules but one day without thinking about it I plugged my phone charging cord into one of their desktop PC's USB port. I immediately got an urgent email which I can paraphrase as "Unplug that fucking phone right this instant, or we're sending the SWAT team down to light your ass up!"

They told me to come here during work when I first started, and I've just been coming back ever since.....
It might be a productivity issue if they're addressing the internet situation. If there's rules/policies about internet usage and work isn't getting done, I can see why they'd be upset.

I once had to set up a university PC to work on a hospital network. Talk about seriously tight security rules. This PC was like Ft. Knox. We had it locked so tight that all you could do on it was a single program. Basically kiosk mode to the fullest extent. Most of the keyboard was disabled and if you turned the machine off, it would reboot and go back to the same program. There was no way around it. Not hard to understand in a hospital environment, though. Ransomware can literally be a matter of life or death with them.

Be aware your employer almost certainly tracks where you go on the web if connected through their network. They may not review it all the time but they may have triggers based on time or certain sites visited. This is nothing new. Before the internet, employers had policies about using the company land line phone and people abused it by making long distance calls and wasting time on personal calls.
I remember needing to fire a guy in the late 1990s. We later found thousands upon thousands of porn videos downloaded onto a company PC. We were wondering if he was compiling a library to run a website off our equipment.
