Traded my 2007 X3 for a 2010 Mini Clubman S with no regrets. The only way I'd buy an X1 is with the turbo 4 or Diesel, kind of hard to go from 28- 32 mpg back to 20 mpg.

Ha- we'll be lucky to get one diesel option at launch. I'd like the 23d but I'd gladly take the 20d as well if I can get near 40mpg hwy. I hope your listening BMW- bring them, they WILL sell- you'll have no AWD competition for goodness sake- don't make me buy a diesel golf- BRING THEM!!!! and don't forget the MANUAL TRANNIES and how bout that sweet cloth that will never happen!!!! Why the shit aren't they here already fudge shake.... Jack and Tab DO IT DO IT

Keeping an eye on the X1 as well, either 20d or 23d. If VW brought a Tiguan TDI to N.A. there'd be some competition, perhaps stretching an A3 TDI...but my BMW diesel experience has been fantastic!
Latest I heard from my dealer was a X1 x23d for Canada (only xDrive, no sDrive) and the x28i some time in early summer 2011. Waiting would be hard for this...but doing ED over the summer would balance the wait.

Mario, I'd agree with you for sure. Even 'strangled' by EPA SCR emissions gear (which you folks will see as EU 6 approaches), the M57Y in my 335d is a well-refined, growling beast. 30,000km and just a single oil change and DEF refill so far. wow!
How do you find the X drives? My wife currently drives an '06 CRD Jeep Liberty (Cherokee to Europeans) and she's looking for something new in the small SUV class. We have a Mk4 Jetta/Bora TDI as well, so we're diesel fans (a very rare thing in North America, for sure) and want to know if it's worth the wait until May/June 2011 for a North American release of the X1...we're told it will be an xDrive23d.) Cheers Duey

Or even better, the 23d.
I need a 2nd car to relieve the 135i from its DD status.

I hope with this long delay (original talk was winter 2010/2011) they will be bringing the diesel in with the first wave, I'm not sure my 2001 Sable can make it another 18 months for MY2012. I've been eyeing the x1 since they made the decision to not bring the 1 series 5 door stateside and the 40mpg with 4 wheel drive on the 20d is a sure winner for me.

I want to believe they'll bring it but I'm going to assume they won't. Few reasons are that I think they'll wait for new 3 series intro, and we've been lied to in the past- diesel Tiguan, diesel TSX, diesel Forester/Legacy, diesel CR-V, I could go on but point made. Further, BMW has made very ambitious performance claims that I'm sure they're working (diligently) to back up. I think if/when we do see a 4cyl. diesel from BMW it will be all new and awesome-r than what's currently available. I honestly hope I'm wrong in this guess because I'm pretty sure (having not experienced either) I would buy an Xdrive 20/23d in a heartbeat. I'm sure we'll know by the time NY auto show swings in come April, maybe sooner- Detroit in Jan perhaps?

Chances of a diesel at US launch are basically zero, IMHO. There's a slim chance we could see one later but I would think that a diesel X3 would come first, and that too probably has only a very small chance.

So if we don't get the diesel will we get the new 8 speed transmission? I don't think the X1 with 2.8 and 6 speed Auto would get any better gas mileage than an X3 with an 8 speed and wouldn't be any quicker which is kind of like what's the point (except cost).

Doubt that too, Europe doesn't currently- 6 speeders and yes other than cost I think you'd be slightly better off in the X3 with the 8 speed from a mileage perspective.

Same reasons people still buy a 335i or 328i vs. a 535i or 528i, I'd imagine. Cost, like you say, is one reason. Also, the smaller vehicle will generally be more agile and more fun to drive.
