I had a 97 Z3 and it also had build quality issues, but I attribute that to it being a new model and a new platform. I also think the first generation Z3 was just a lousy car as BMW was trying to make a car that should have cost $40-50k but instead they wanted to be able to charge $30k. So they used cheap materials. The result was a car loaded with rattles that felt cheap. I sold mine less than 2 years later. Every other BMW I've had since, including a Mini Cooper, were all very solid vehicles and none of them ever needed a single repair.

#1 - My E92 was built in Regensburg (IN Bavaria) and they didn't build it with the standard sport suspension. Still loved the car the way it was, especially for the crappy NY roads. #2 - The E90 was built in Munich (definitely Bavaria) and after pick up @ Die Welt, noticed a noise as if there was something rolling around in the frame behind the front seats. After it arrived stateside, they took it apart and found a grommet had fallen through the subframe and they removed it. BTW, a friend of mine has both an X5 and X3 that were built in SC and loves them dearly. Wondering if I waited for the next gen X1, I could finally say that my SO has a Brazillian...

Seriously though the UK has come a long way from the dark days of the 70's. Unfortunately most of what we make are German or Japanese. Leipzig is in Saxony and used to be part of East Germany. Porsche also have a factory there. |

Yeah, my 97 Z3 was just an impulse purchase. I have to admit it was probably the coolest looking car I ever had. But that was its only good quality -- looks. It did handle well, but was slow (I had the 1.9L 4 cylinder), cheaply made, and had very few luxury features. Mine did not even have the power top, I had to lower it manually. Eventually you get tired of a car if its only good quality is its looks.

Funny, I'm 6'2" and once I took a turkey carver to the foam under the leather and removed the travel limiting blocks at the rear of the seat rail, I fit better in that car than I ever did in my M Coupe or my buddy's E85.

Z3 had a V6, not an I6?
Regensburg plant has been around since the 70's. My old E36 M3/4 was made there. Did a factory tour in May 2000. Last edited by Van1; 03-03-2014 at 06:45 PM.. |

Concur; thought this was about 1 and 5 series...
Test hopped an X3 some years ago when a buddy was car shopping, and I was quite impressed with that. It is my impression that the current X1 is about the same size as the older X3, and perhaps based on the same platform. Fond as I am of my X1, the US fixation with SUV/SAV is a mystery; in many ways a wagon or 5-door hatchback makes more sense. The 5 is more vehicle and more money than I can deal with. Moon |

Coming from a SC built 2011 X5d, I never had any issues/problems with it. While it is significantly bigger than the X1, it drove/handled surprisingly well. I fact, much better than my 2006 Infiniti FX35, which was smaller and more "car like".
Overall fit and finish of the X5 is much better than that of the X1. I got rid of the X5, and now drive a X1 35 with ultimate package and m sport. X1 is more fun to drive, and is a beast. But the X5 was no slouch... |

What possible reason would you want soft close doors? Seems like feautres for no reason. Even less useful feature than the auto lift-gates.

They are nice and add an added sense of luxury. If you don't want something then don't opt for it. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean others shouldn't

Could it possible lock someones fingers in the car? Seems like added weight and complexity for nothing gained. A sense of luxury could be attained by adding features that are useful. Like a quality audio system, rear heated seats, a rear windshield wiper that clears the whole window and not just a small part. Thicker seats like the Audi All Road. The X5 interior does look really high quality.
