It seems like we've heard rumors on that, but I can't find any facts right now. The LCI already happened, and that is typically done a little after the mid-cycle of the series, so just using that logic, we'll likely only have three or four total years of US availability, so MY15 or MY16 will almost certainly be the end of the E84 and the beginning of the next X1.

i have a feeling the 35d will have a 6sp since it is better suited for handling higher torque than the 8sp. The 8sp is a very weak transmission.

Just to confirm, both the existing F30 330d and the F10 535d already use the 70Z version in place of the 45Z too. BMW used the 6s on our 35i cars because they had an inventory of them they needed to burn off. It's bad for fleet mileage though, so if they either start selling lots of 35i's or run out of 6s transmissions, they'll toss in the 45Z for our car too. But I'd bet they have a pretty good idea of how to make their existing supply meet demand just about perfectly. Last edited by Red Bread; 05-08-2013 at 04:58 PM.. |

That "very weak" transmission is used with cars like Maserati Quattroporte, Jaguar F-type and the V12 BMW 760i, and you think it can't handle the torque of a 35d?

I thought it was because the 35i already appeals to those who want to flex muscles, and the 6-speed feeds that image. Again, I doubt many people buy the 35i because gas mileage is a primary concern. Quote:
And if the car has to be recertified anyhow, why not come out with a new model instead? |

With a previous job, BMW IT told me that when the manufacturing process control application goes down, the part delivery trucks backup on the highway within hours... |

Nearly everyone buys a car with at least a modicum of efficiency in mind. The simple fact is that the 8s is more efficient (and feels like it, yawn). However given the choice between the 8s 45Z that would get 3-4 mpg more and our transmission, I doubt many folks would choose the 6s, what's the benefit? At first it appeared that F30 335i's might not be as quick as N55 E90's, but now that many are through break in, that appears to be anything but true.
My guess is that if they did run out the 6s, they'd just end production of the 35i. It's only made for our market, it appears to be the only car in BMW's lineup still using this transmission and I'd guess that they'd still sell plenty of X1's if only the 28i were available. BMW will not spend much money on the E-chassis, especially the US only version. |

I don't really care about this, I already own and enjoy the E84 with the ZF6. |

do you know anyone with a Maserati Quattroporte. I have 4 friends that own them and the rule is get rid of the car before 40k miles since the majority need new transmissions. My parents were looking at getting one and they found so many problems listed online from owners that the decided not to get one. if that transmission can handle so much power as you claim why do M cars use a DSG??
