Here is my NON Sport bump stop with the lower half trimmed and the dust boot back on. Here is where I cut it.

I see someone on here selling a set of modfied KW coilovers from an E9X chassis, modified for the E84.
What is the actual difference between the 2? Becuase this could open up a lot more options if its on a small bit of modfying needed. They were for sale in the US if I remember rightly so don't fancy paying the shipping ha |

He just made adapters (see the two rings in the pics) for the front struts to fit into the larger holes in the X1 knuckles. But anyway, that's certainly a better question to pose to him to confirm. But from his ad, that's a set of standard E90 x drive KWs, sold with a small sleeve to be slid over each front strut to effectively widen them a hair.

PSI has had a vendor add for BC coilovers posted on the forums for a while now too.

I ordered BC for my X1 Xdrive and will be here on monday 3 weeks built time for Xdrive . Can't wait to install! Tired of having 3 inch fender gap on my Apex Arc8. Josh from BC Racing USA was very helpful...

Really looking forward to your thoughts on those.
Hey Apex, I know that some were, but BC told me those were only available for the S Drive models. Not really sure about anything anymore! |

After a year and a half of riding H&R springs with stock shocks/struts, I finally had enough and got the Bilstein HDs recommended here. They are indeed all that. It really does make the ride into a luxury, yet sporty one. Compared to the stock struts/shocks, all the little cracks/bumps/hiccups in the road are muted. That does not mean the ride is soft--feels taut. Haven't driven enough to see if the bottoming out still occurs with more severe road imperfections.
Install was soooo easy for the rears. The fronts were definitely easier the 2nd time around since less spring compression is required with the H&Rs. Some install tips for the front: 1- use a socket or extension with a 1/4" socket head (don't use a 1/4" wrench itself because the head may get damaged with the spreading) for the steering knuckle spreader to get the bottom of the strut out. I think this is better than a fancy tool or driving a screwdriver or chisel down the split. 2- Once you tilt the top of the strut out of the wheel well, do not tilt too far or you risk popping a bearing when the axle joint overextends itself. this time around, I had no problems with the axle joints. 3- When replacing the strut assembly back, use a ratcheting strap to compress the strut even more than the spring compressor will do. These HD's are a little different in that they extend out further. You will need to have more compression than it took to get the stock strut assembly with H&R's out than it takes to put the H&R/Bilstein HDs back in--it's not just the springs that need compressing, you need to compress the Bilstein HDs! 4- Pay attention when tightening the strut mount nuts up top. The holes are oblong and you can get camber into factor specs if you tighten the nuts with the bolts pushed outward. If you want more camber for cornering performance, push them inward before tightening. I must have removed the positioning tab the first time because it wasn't there. Tip for rears: When installing the new shock, compress the shock on your garage floor. Quickly insert the bottom end into proper hole in the lower rear arm. With the bottom in place, you can easily compress the shock by hand and get the top lined up. I would say that ride height so far has increased about 1/4-1/2". Not sure if the combo will "settle" since my springs are well-broken in. I took off a segment of bump stop in the rear and cut the front internal bump stops in half. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread!!! My bottom thanks you! Last edited by themishmosh; 04-01-2016 at 02:25 PM.. |

Nice!
I think you made the right call trimming the F/R stops right off the bat. It may settle a little, but not much you can do about the slight ride height increase with the Bilsteins, nature of high pressure gas shocks. I do wish I could get the rear a 1/2" lower...but I'm fine with it.

As far as ride height goes... Now I'm not so sure the height increased at all after the Bilstein HDs were installed. Here is a pic I took after the install:
It kind of looks the same as it always has. Anyone with H&Rs think differently? |

With M4 OEM wheels 255/35 295/30. With 2 people in the rear it rubs the fender trim over big bumps lol

I was wondering lol those are way aggressive for an xdrive. On my 335 xdrive I had 235/35/19 265/30/19 I wonder if I could pull that off on the xdrive x1...
