Light alloy wheel size and selection.
Hi to everyone;
I have my X1 for 1 month now. I have standart 17" light alloy wheels. Would you recommend 18" or 19" wheels? Last edited by ortos; 08-27-2010 at 03:12 PM.. |

I went for the 18" wheels.
For the looks I would definitely go for 19" (or even 20"), but for the kind of roads we have here, the 18" were a much better compromise. As I have the sports suspension as I was a bit afraid it would be too "hard"; but quite the opposite, even with 18" and sports suspension the car is quite confortable - I wouldn't mind if it was a bit harder, especially at very high speeds. |

To the best of my knowledge the spec for rims are: PCD : 5x120 Offset : 30 to 50 Bore : 72.6. These are on 17" to 20". I must say I am surprised by the allowed variation in the offset! Must be due to the large clearance in the wheel arches. If you are not sure what those figures mean, ask and I will explain in more detail. |

I can check, any model in particular?
PS: Had a look and yes the Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD) is the same for all the modern BMW's. Please note that this is not the only parameter however, you have also have offset and bore. Last edited by mario486; 09-13-2010 at 03:26 PM.. |

I was also over the moon with my new X1 when she first arrived..... 10500km and 4 punctures later I can drop kick it to the moon......
My car was spec'ed by the dealer with Y-spoke 322 18" mixed tyres...... I only recently discovered that only Pirelli make the tyre that fits this rim...... no shopping around guys....one brand. What rubbish is that..... Then to discover that the rim will never take a tyre suited to dirt road....least of all South African dirt roads...... so I now have a 4 wheel drive that will never see a dirt track in it's entire life. I live in a rural village and bought this vehicle as I would need to travel along dirt farm roads. I hold my breathe now when I drive her as I dread that run-flat light on my dashboard. My recommendation, think carefully about the rims you put on...... and make sure you can afford the tyres when you need to replace them. At E450 per tyre it may just cost me more in tyres than I paid for the entire vehicle. |

Would it not be better to fit a set of non-bmw 17" rims with standard 225 tyres? |
