Great deal on 2015 x1, is it worth it or should i get a 2016+ model?
Found a great x1 2015 i28. Got the seller down to $7.5k. it has 120k miles on it, and was a commuter car. Seller says mechanic checked it out recently and no problems were found. I know the N20 engine has had some problems and was wondering if it's a good deal to jump on or should i just break down and get a 2016+ x1 from a dealership for around $18-20k? Any thoughts are helpful

They've had timing chain issues. I would not rely on what they told you their mechanic said. Get your own pre-purchase inspection before you buy. If the seller doesn't agree to one, I would pass.

I feel the N20 timing issues are somewhat overblown as a result of internet echoes. There are literally millions of BMW N20 models sold globally. I wouldn't lose sleep over this rare phenomenon.
You should always conduct your own inspection to your satisfaction. This applies to any used cars. |

The E84 (up to 2015) and F48 (2015-2022) X1s have much of the same DNA, I think both of them are good cars. Personally I chose an E84 for price reasons and because I liked the E84 body style more, but I must admit that the F48 will have better tech (ie: cell phone interface) and better reliability due to the B48 engine.
$7.5k for a 2.8i at 120k is at or just above KBB value, so I don't think it's that amazing of a deal. A new set of tires, major engine maintenance, and second brake overhaul often pop up between 120-150k, and quickly diminish the savings of an older car. Obviously your finances can dictate what you get, but personally I might opt to spend a few more thousand on something in the 60-80k mile range and not have to worry about four-digit shop bills for a while. |
