2nd fob
I have one fob that works and want to purchase a 2nd fob. Can I buy a used one from fleabay/salvage or should I buy a new one? Can I program a new or used one or should I take it to a mobile locksmith for programming? The locksmith wants $350 to program a new fob and cut the key.
Car is a 2015 BMW X1 (E84) with comfort access. |

Locksmith normally have everything needed and often quote price with fob supplied.
Any reasons to have a blade cut?

It's a safer bet to buy a new one, and doesn't make a difference for the process. Copies can be had on Amazon/eBay for under $30.
Rallye BMW details the process for cloning additional keys below: https://www.rallyebmw.com/how-to-pro...h%20your%20BMW! Getting the metal cut would ensure that you are able to enter your car if somehow the security system rejected your aftermarket key. I am going to try to program a backup through this method, will update on how it works. |
