BMW X1 X20D engine siezed
Hello all,
I am a new owner of 2010 BMW X1 X20d manual transmission. i did oil and oil filter change on this car. I used Castrol 5W-30 diesel oil. after about 2 days and a very short trip the engine has seized. I think may be i incorrectly installed the oil filter. So my question is to all members who read this about installation of oil filter. The oil filter is of cartridge type with little extended notch with oring. The oil filter housing has a hole at the bottom which i thought is for this particular extended part of oil filter cartridge so i installed it in and closed the filter cap. Was i correct in installing that way? i tried starting the car but nothing happens i am most likely going to replace the engine. Appreciate your constructive response. regards Vishwesh |

Hi Vishwesh, do you have any photos? 5W30 should be ok.
Too little/too much oil is obviously bad, how much did you put in and did you have any warnings/codes? I'm seeing 5.2 liters as the volume spec. Good luck! |

The filter does indeed install in that manner, however it's not unheard of for the o-ring to remain behind and be pushed into the gallery, which can cause a blockage.
Before doing anything else, try turning the engine by hand from the crank. Slip the trans in Neutral and turn the motor. That will tell you if it's seized or not. From there you can diagnose based on that. Start from there as I'll be very surprised if it's seized. |
