Intercooler options for X1 35
N55 motor. I like vrsf products on my N54 car so thinking about them on my n55 X1.
Does the 5" have good enough performance for highway pulls here and there and the occasional drag strip night out? Not doing track days in the X1 so I'm thinking of 5" assuming it requires no trimming. I know the 7" needs trimming. Anyone running vrsf 5" or other aftermarket intercooler on their n55 X1? |

Most intercoolers aren't enough for typical track days, drag strip, because the heat soak waiting for your turn. Most of my runs start at 100F. I have the older 7 inch VRSF unit and without methanol I would climb 30-50 degrees in a 1/4 mile.
The trimming on the X1 isn't bad to fit a 7 inch unit and I would go for the HD core VRSF is offering now. https://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/show....php?t=1598506 In the 6th photo down you can see the amount I had to cut away vs what is there now. It really isn't bad.

I have a 5" stepped Wagner IC mainly because I wanted to keep the OEM connectors. No trimming required and easy to return to stock. During a 3rd gear log pull that reaches 18 psi peak there is about an 8 degree rise in IAT. On a 1/4 mile run (not at a track, so heat soak while waiting isn't an issue) its about 20 degrees.

I considered the 5" VRSF, but I drive my car very hard so setlled on the stepped 7.5" version. Holy hell it's huge, and heavy. LOTS of trimming required.
