Steering Failure
Hi All --
2013 X1 sdrive28i. 87,000 miles. About 6 weeks ago, I had a steering assistance malfunction warning pop-on whilst driving. It disappeared after a complete restart. It came back a few more times and I haven't seen it again for about a month. Today it came on, then off and almost immediately after the steering got extremely heavy. It worsened the further I went. Luckily I was only a few blocks from home. Parked now, but the steering wheel is almost locked. After restart, no change or warnings. Anyone else have this experience, or thoughts on it? I just had it in for an oil change and look over last week and it came back clean. Thanks! |

Brought to a local Indy shop. Needs new steering rack and module. Looking at $2200...ouch! I think I'm about done with the car after this. Last year's waste gate actuator failure, oil gasket, coolant casket and oil filter housing failure weren't great either.

Did the shop give any more specifics? Was it the motor on the rack or something with the rack itself? And what module are they replacing?

Not sure of the exact parts that needed to be ordered. It sounded like it was entire thing and it was coming from the East Coast. Dealer had quoted me $3100 before labor. So I think I'm getting a fair deal from my shop.
As for the reliability, I had a good run. At 30K the thermostat went. And then last year, around 70K, the car really started to have issues, as stated above. I'll probably keep it for a little bit longer after I get it back from the shop, but it is for sale, if anyone is interested. I'll probably go back to P cars after this one. |
