AIRBAG Recall
I did get the letter dated March 2016 for my X1 airbag recall, since then until recently I have been calling the local BMW dealer to scheduled an appointment for the airbag replacement, the response has been no airbag available, I should mention on above letter said that I was going to be notify again by letter 'to perform the recall to my vehicle'.
I got upset about the whole thing of calling and waiting, so I went straight to the source BMWUSA and I called Customer Relations and services 800.525.7417, they confirm the X1 VIN # and I was told to call a dealer or any authorize shop to make an appointment for the replacement of the airbag...I'm scheduled for next month (Feb), the bottom line is to call the 800# to have a confirmed customer information and service, I think it is ridiculous to wait close to two years for something so critical to our lives and hopping not to get in a car accident and to be mauled by a safety device. |

I think it's impressive that a company can handle the logistics and manufacturing of a recall of this magnitude, all while fulfilling continued contractual supply for new cars. I was never worried personally due to the nature of the fault and the age of my car. |

It's true though that it gets unnerving when you realize you've been driving with a fairly dangerous airbag during that waiting period. |

I posted this to bimmerfest, and Copy/Paste here. I've also seen there were ultimatum options if you wanted out of the "dangerous vehicle" if you tried hard enough that wouldn't break your bank. Begin post:
Virtually every single car manufacturer and car made has an airbag that is defective. That's millions, if not hundreds of millions of cars. I think for perspective, you should go and make your own airbag and see how many you can make in a day, week, or month. Could they handle it better by not saying soon, sure - but that is marketing and PR saying "what is better, soon or we don't know yet". I'm not trying to be funny or rude, but this is a massive situation. Also it may be right or wrong, but I've read in the past BMW was working on developing their own replacements instead of going to a normal OEM which would exacerbate that situation if true. This isn't like a bad waterpump in a few vehicle models, where taking months is unacceptable. My $.55 (since .02 can't even get a phone call now). Expecting what is right as consumers is one thing, but realistic expectations from a global issue is another. I'm almost astonished one company had so much to do with a single item in a car, but surprises happen every day. |

I'm pretty sure there are folks on e90post that were able to get rentals, on BMW's dime while waiting on their part to become available. You can do your own research on that because I don't know the details.

Wrong, you can get a rental for the 1 hour it takes to put the inflator in. Yes I had a E93 and E84 with bad inflators. They are not giving rental cars for the years it takes some people to get inflators. It took me 1.5 years from the letter and actually never received the inflator so I traded the E93 for a Tacoma because I was so sick of dealing with the dealer. It took months to get the inflator for an E84 and literally got a rental car for 1 hour.

I stopped in at my local dealer yesterday ti see if they could provide me with service records on my new to me 2014 X1. I knew about the airbag recall. They had an airbag in stock and replaced it on the spot. It took 20 minutes. Fortunate circumstances!

Not a single fatality or even injury reported on a BMW with the old airbags. If it was an older Honda (where the airbags were notorious for deaths/injuries) I'd totally understand. I just got mine done on my M-Sport, but it was only because I was in for some other CPO work at the time. |
