Ride Too Hard - Tyre options?
Hi, our recently purchased X1 is proving to have a bit of a hard ride for me. It's has the M Sport styling and 255/35 R 19 fitted.
We need two new rear tyres and I was hoping for some advice on options for getting a more comfortable ride. I know they are run flats and having had those before, know that they don't have much give in them. Are there any options here please (that don't cost the earth!) Thanks. |

They are all season (we don't really get 'difficult' weather here!).
I was wondering if there was a doable option that could be put on the back now and then front when they need changing? |

You have staggered wheels, so that's going to be a bit more difficult. I supposed a 245/35-19 will work both an 8 and a 9" wheel...a bit shorter than stock, but not too bad. Your speedo will actually be more accurate now.
In general though, you should look into downsizing to 18" wheels to improve your ride. Conti DWS is a softer-ridign all-season which maintains some level or performance. Soft sidwall, but will help a lot in ride comfort. NO RUN-FLATS!

I will never ever understand low profile rubber on a raised vehicle. looks silly and butchers the ride.
Get the highest profile rubber you can whilst staying within 3% of rolling circumference, ideally 17 inch wheels. 225/50's really suit this car. |

I've got 8x18 and 9x18 staggered summer performance P7's on a M Sport s28i.
I'd rate tires firm on bumps, but ride very good; I could run these forever and be happy, since they are the best tires I've ever had. I'm going to lower profile non runflat like Michelin PSS 225/40r18 and 255/35r18 when I get about 30k on original P7's. |

My X1 with MSport has 17" rims and they look perfectly suited to the car. |

Visually i think 18's look best, with maybe 235/45's. But for ride on what is a very stiffly sprung car, 17's with 225/50's are excellent.

If you're in the US, they have the sensors. If you're in Canada, they don't.
You can also look at the valve stem - metal stem means you probably have sensors |

Yup, you guys run the wheel-speed pressure monitoring standard over there. We're left with coding that onto our cars in the states to get rid of the god forsaken TPMS sensors.

I would much prefer TPMS to be honest. The ABS based system is not at all sensitive - took my rear tire going to 28 psi before it threw the warning. The time before that it only threw the warning at 26 psi for the front tire. So basically almost 10 psi difference before it notices
The sensors I had in my Impreza told me within 5 psi. Edit: my X1 currently has. 17" alloys with non RFT tires. I imagine if I have lower profile sidewalls and RFT then the system won't notice a leak until the tires are literally flat. Last edited by vstolpner; 01-13-2017 at 03:03 PM.. |

I have the OE 18s with all season RFT and am good with that look. One thing to check with the 35i is whether or not front brakes will clear 17s |

Regarding the FTM in Canadian x1, when I threw in 17"winter set, the sensor chimed in to let me know there's a tire pressure inbalance. I had to reset it. There was a ~4psi difference with the rear winter tires vs the original 18" 422 rears. This might sound abit old school but I check my car's tire pressure likewise fluid levels, pads, tread etc manually. Still annoys me that there is no dip stick. Competition agree with the absense of dipstick. Really wish I had a way to see the state the oil is in. It's been almost a year since my oil change and I'm getting worried that the oil needs renewal.
