question re iDrive brake service estimates
I bought my 2013 28i sDrive just after Thanksgiving 2012. So it's coming up on end of warranty in a few months. Mileage is just below 48,000.
A couple months ago I checked the iDrive Service Required list and it said front brakes (or rear? Think it was front) would need to be done in 2300 miles. I was at about 45,000 at that point. Took a long trip up to SF area from home in LA. About 800+ miles round trip. Checked again - and it had gone from service in 2300 miles to....2400! It's been a couple months since then and another 2000 miles on odometer. Just checked and now it says in 2500 miles... So apparently my brake linings are getting thicker? At this rate, I have a feeling I'm not going to get that service in under warranty...oh well. Brake fluid and another oil change will be covered. But those are some miraculous brake linings...anyone else with similar experience? |

Same happened to me. I had them look at brakes just before 50,000 miles - they said I still had about 75% of my pads remaining, and reset the next check out 37,000 miles.

I wonder if the computer projects that based on your driving. Were you driving more aggressively before the trip? Maybe all the LA stop and go traffic? How aggressive were the last 2,000 miles?

Aerospike makes a good point. Actually the X1 was used by my partner primarily for the last year, for short trips within LA (school, work). I've been using it while partner is out of country this summer, thinking I'd get the X1 closer to 50,000 miles as November approaches, and get the most out of covered service. But I coast a lot lol. Partner tends to race up to stop signs and hit brakes :-(

So just drive there next couple hundred miles like you're on the F1 team and then take the car in. Plus even if it's still 2500 miles you might be able to convince them to do it anyway.

According to my dealer it uses somewhat of a pre programmed time in its logic as well. Mine showed due in 7000 miles on my recent purchased car with 17k on it even though the pads were replaced at some point and appear almost new. Per the service guy he said it has to get to 2500 miles before he can reset it.
He also said they can go up like yours has or sit at some mileage for a very long time.

My Indy shop and dealer told me the front brakes needed to be replaced. I didn't like their prices so I bought the pads at the dealer and the rotors online (drilled and slotted). I admit I did not bother inspecting the pads myself since both shops, over a few month period, told me they needed to be replaced.
The day I replaced them I pulled one side off and noticed the pads were over 50% remaining, I figured the other side must have worn out prematurely. No such luck, it was fine too. The rotors barely had a lip on them. Since I had all the parts I went ahead and replaced them and kept the old rotors in case I need them later. I figure the computer told the shop rats that the pads were worn out so that is why they told me, no one ever checked the actual condition. I blame myself almost as much as I blame them, they are pros so they should have caught it. Don't trust the computer. Last edited by Mtpisgah; 08-23-2016 at 08:51 PM.. |

Good question. Because all the sensors disconnect us from the car. Maybe because I'm still under warranty, but I know very little about my 35 (at least by my standards) and I've had it for two years. I can list the tools you need, including extensions and socket sizes, for most jobs on my other vehicles, but not the BMW.
