i35 in Manual Mode
Can someone tell me why the i35 will no shift down to first gear on its own when coming to a stop in manual mode? To clarify:
You're driving in, say, M6. You're stopping, but you don't downshift yourself, you let the car do it. The car keeps shifting down to the M2, but even if it comes to a complete stop it will not go down into M1 unless you push the shifter forward once. Why??? Am I the only one who has this problem? |

I mean, it's not a "problem" per say. It's intentional.
You have two options, move it into first yourself, or start from second. I'm not sure why they programmed it that way though...

It's not a problem now that I know I'm not the only one whose transmission does this. It's now one of the little things BMW does that annoys me, like manually having to switch the GPS to night mode when the car has at least two different light sensors on it.
Thanks! |

I mean, you are in manual mode afterall. So it annoys you that you actual have to...you know...manually shift it?
I guess that's the answer then... It only downshifts through the other gears to prevent you from stalling (you should be downshifting it yourself, you're in manual mode). The car is perfectly capable of being slowed and fully stopping, as well as pulling away in second, so there's no reason to make the shift to first. The other downshifts are out of necessity.

I have the Alpina trans flash and i think it will go to 1st. I know it does in the sport setting for sure, I'll check the M mode tomorrow and report back. The flash is really worth looking into, the car is mellow and shifts early in regular drive mode and then is much more intuitive/aggressive in sport/manual mode. Adds gear indicator on dash as well. Look at other 335 forums for full details... and actually some guys report faster 1/4 mile times when launch car in 2nd vs 1st(wheel spin and the extra shift)

Having to downshift doesn't annoy me. It's BMW logic that does. Either do the entire job of downshifting or don't do it at all. I'd rather have a no crap manual mode where the car doesn't downshift at all.
I've thought about the Aplina trans flash, but I'm still under warranty. Just another 25,000 miles to go. |

In manual mode, most people want the LEAST computer controlled shifting occurring as possible. In this instance, that's making up for your poor driving, while leaving the car running/operable...aka second gear. It is a factory flash. No warranty concerns.

I wonder if it would drop into first if it sensed you were pulling something, heavily loaded, or driving through mud? If it's just the weight of the car to be pulled, the engine has plenty of torque.

Wow, you have some very strong views about my driving. Believe me, I don't need bailing out. I've ridden my motorcycle in Rome, Paris, Madrid, London and Cairo. I'm very comfortable shifting for myself with my right hand or left foot.
Good to know about the Alpina flash. |

I guess I'm just a bit confused.
Most people, presumably, would want as little automatic shifting as possible when in manual mode. That's what BMW gave you. If you're in manual mode, why aren't you doing the downshifting? And why do you want more automatic intervention?

I don't want automatic intervention, I wanted the six speed manual and a third pedal in the car. I'm just exploring what the transmission does. My GF's VW shifts all the way down to 1st in manual mode and she has the 2.5L turbo, which has OK power. This is my first auto car with fake manual mode and I was wondering why it did what it did (downshifting to M2, but not M1). I wonder if the eight speed in the i28 does the same thing.

The downshifting on our cars seems to be done too early. I will often try to downshift only to find the tranny shifted down just before I did--the result? I'm in the wrong gear. I think if you are not in any hurry, starting from a stop in M2 is smoother than M1 because the M1-to-M2 shift is not smooth at all (lurches forward in most cases). Maybe BMW is trying to avoid that.

Too early? I have the opposite experience. It's always a gear too high around turns. Like PrematureApex said, the transmission just tries to keep the car from stalling. It doesn't really set you up with the right gear to enter a turn.

The eight speed doesn't downshift to first in manual - haven't been in a car that does. I agree with PrematureApex - manual is manual and the car shouldn't interfere except when it will cause a problem (like stalling), it should let me do the thinking and let me control the situation.
That said I'm actually very happy with the way the weight speed performs, especially when pulling away and hearing it shift every 500rpm for what seems like an endless supply of gears... Lol Edit: actually correction to my first statement - if I recall correctly, my '11 Impreza used to down shift to first gear but only after I came to a complete stop and even then it waited a second or two before doing it. Of course that was a 4-speed auto so the second gear didn't have as much pull as it does in our gearboxes. |

It's always in a gear too high? Again, it is in manual mode. You are in a gear too high!
