Is it safe to say the (E84) X1 is a combo of the E90 and F30?
Hello everyone, I am curious to get everyone's opinion.
The X1 in the "s/X drive 28i" is basically a 328i with a different body. I know that the E84 X1 is based on the last gen 3 series, which for those who don't know, was internally called the E90. But it wasn't until the F30 (new gen 3 series) that the N20 4 cylinder with 240 horsepower came around. So if the X1 has the F30 power-train and components while having the E90 interior... is it safe to say the X1 is a hybrid of them both? Right now I own a 2015 X1 in the Sdrive 28i but I am currently doing some research on long term reliability and so far I have been hearing from both parties that the new 328i is reliable, but the E90's were bulletproof, Opinions? Thanks |

I think one of the members who were talking about the E90's I guess, he was saying that the E90's were well built, but then I also heard that the less car tech and things a car has, the less chance of anything malfunctioning.

Yeah newer BMWs are known to have issues farther down the road, E90 included. And the biggest known issue with the X1 is transfer case (which was also the case for E90 xDrive).
And I would say the X1 is closer to the E90 just with a different engine, not the F30. |

E90s bulletproof???? HPFP?? Valve Lifter Issues?? Turbo Failures?? Clogged intakes requiring walnut shell blasting?? Fuel Injector Clogging??
I love my BMW and I'm a big fan of BMW's engineering, but the last thing I would call them is bulletproof....

As for the OP's question. It's an E91. The N20 first appeared in the X1, not the F30. So in a sense, it's really the E84 powertrain which has been installed in the F30. So far, the only real issue that has been seen with the N20 is the waste gate. The xDrive box as well can become problematic, but I think it's a lesser problem. The only real issue I've had with my car to date was with the pano roof. It leaked and caused in excess of $7000 damage. Warranty paid for the whole shebang as well as loss of use of the vehicle. This is a more common problem with any vehicle with a pano roof, than it is just with the X1.
