Diesel Journeys
Quick question.
I now own my first diesel. Just wanted to know what is classed as a short journey in a diesel as I know short journeys are classed as. I do quite a bit of driving on 'A roads' as we call them here in the UK which are 50MPH roads but not very long distance by any means. My work is around 9 miles away and that's pretty much all a roads. I do go to car shows at weekends etc which tend to be a couple hours away. So the car does get some long distance driving and some short a road journeys etc. Just trying to figure out for future DPF issues |

Might have a hard time with this question as most users here are in North America where we weren't offered diesel X1s...but good luck!

City 60Kph with exception around School Area 40 to 50. Out of City 80Kph, which I get to on the way to work. H/Way and F/Way 100 to 110Kph. Use when Service due and visiting Son. Am fortunate here to have good Fuel Regulations. I only use Premium Diesel which has additives and should clean/protect engine better. How's your fuel quality there and are you using Premium? I might be moving to the Big City and keeping the Diesel so on the W/ends would be hitting the H/Way, F/Way just to blow the cobwebs out occasionally. |

Yeah I mean our fuel over here is fine from Shell / BP but can get horrible cheap stuff from supermarkets, but its actually only about 5p cheaper than the good stuff.
Can also get the more expensive stuff which as more additives in which I may start doing 1 tank a month of to try clear out the system, just don't think it's worth it in a diesel. But didn't think of it helping to clean the DPF.. |

I intend keeping mine for long time and Premium is my only choice from the pump. I change oil every year instead of the BMW Recommended 2 Years with the Best Quality Oil, which is actually a bit better than BMW use.
Enjoy looking after your's. |

I do 12 miles on mainly A roads, at speeds of 20-40 for my commutes. Had the car 4 months now and no problems at all. Not sure how long it takes to be an issue?
Was a worry, but i was so desperate to get an automatic after my juddery clutched A6 that logic went out the window!! My 23d gets pretty awful mpg for my commutes though, hovers around 32.

Yeah my MPG seems to be stuck around 32 aswell.... Not sure how accurate it is..
I think it's ok if the turbo gets hot in turn causing the DPF to get hot also. I'm driving up to Sheffield tomorrow might stick in sports mode for a bit and cruise so its sits around 2.5K.. |

I was doing very small commuting in my last job (about 3 miles) for 6 months with no issues. I noticed a burning rubber smell from the back of the car a few times which according to forums is the DPF doing its stuff.
My new job is 19miles on A and B roads and also very hilly but I’m returning 43mpg (down to 41.5 now the schools are back and traffic increased) I also have to do Uni runs several times a year of 540mile round trips for one and now will also do about 400 to Sheffield for the other child. I usually get 50-53mpg on those runs and I believe that these runs do the engine/DPF good but personally, haven’t noticed any difference Not wishing to state the obvious but.........have you reset your MPG gauge ? |

Never seen over 50mpg in my 23D :-( I do know it is badly geared for motorway speeds compared to the 20d.
Not often i get out and about on long runs though, when i do i'm lucky to get 45mpg. I reset the trip every fill up to see if it changes - not for my commutes it doesn't! Times i wished i'd gone for a 20d, but then when i give mine a poke, it does go like stink!

What brand of oil do you use ? I drive a X1 2.0D as well and I have been using Mobil 1 turbo truck, which is for high performance diesel engine. |

The 20D S drive is 177BHP so it's by no means the slowest X drive would have been nice I guess but I was more concerned about the colour of the car and m sport etc. |

What did you actually get when you reset your gauge?
I did the Sheffield round trip (approx 260miles) and got 51.9MPG including traffic in Sheffield City Centre - was over 53mpg before that. 2 long stretches of 50MPH average speed cameras probably helped. 3 adults, a complete University luggage and gubbins incl top-box probably hindered. As the Sat Nav stated 47 when I was locked onto 50 in the camera zones (isn't cruise control brilliant) I'm guessing the true figure to be around 50mpg which is bloody fantastic. |

Think it was around 47 when I was driving sensible but I became ill getting hot flushes etc so I didn't hang around I needed to get home.
I'm doing some M25 driving on Sunday, providing the traffic isn't too bad I will get a reading then and try average 70mph.. How long that will last on the M25 I don't know ha |

I believe BMW were changing over to Shell. The Dealer I got car from was using Shell but the Dealer closer to home I Service the car at uses Castrol. I use Castrol after talking to there Tech. People I can also use it on my old 2005 Golf TDI. 5L Container. Oddly it doesn't say Diesel on the front. Says the following from top to bottom. Castrol EDGE FST 5W-30 FULLY SYNTHETIC Castrols Strongest Oil Part No.3373545. On the back, bottom R/H Corner. Most places that sell Auto Parts have there own Coding for Products SO it is very important to make sure you see the correct Part No. on the back or wherever the Mobil/Castrol etc. Brand People tell you it is. Sorry for long drawn out reply but have found but some say try this, some say try that etc. It's down to you to make sure the best oil goes in your car. |

45mpg is pretty good on long runs. I flogged mine on my last 900Km round trip, City H/Way etc. and got overall 5.5L/100Km's. Sorry you will have to convert to mpg. I inquired to purchase a 2011 23d and they wanted AUD$70,000 for a Demo. one with 4500Km's on the clock. Out of my Pricing Logic. I ordered the 20d with the Options I wanted. Enjoy your's. |

Have you spoken to you Dealer. Freeway should be 5 to 7L/100Km's. On one of my trips I recorded 4.7, 4.8 and 4.9L/100Km's for Highway/Freeway High Speed Driving. |
