Whats the average maintenance cost for x1?
Whats the average maintenance cost for x1?
I know the first 4 years maintenance fees are covered. But how much should I expect per year after that? Ie: Oil change from BMW, and other stuff that I might've to replace due to wear and tears etc. |

I love BMWs...I'm on my 5th....I trade them all in before the warranty expires....anything breaks and its big bucks!
Both adaptive xenons went on my 2008 328xi coupe. Had them replaced under warranty but my SA said they would have been..........wait for it.......$1200 each!!! For a headlight. All four suspension mounts needed replacing, radio amp blew and the head was faulty and needed replacing under recall....that one would have been a cool $8000!!! Camshaft on my first X1 needed replacing under warranty. Huge money! 2 fuel pumps went on my 2005 330i sedan. My dealership is great and they always fix everything right the first time. I get a free loaner and gourmet coffee and snacks. I'd never own one outside of warranty. |

I don't own a BMW but looking to own one.
Based on what you said, does that mean they are not reliable? Also, if you are trading in all the time, then why not lease instead? What about the extended warranty packages they offer? Are they not worth to consider? |

I had my M Coupe for a dozen years and 143k miles. It was about the same cost to maintain as my precious Miata. We kept our 135i out of warranty for a little over a year and while it rang up about $20k of warranty repairs, it was trouble free out of warranty.
Just simple things to note, BMW's are designed for the autobahn, so things like brakes and tired tend to be a little more expensive than Japanese cars. But overall, in my experience, they're really not bad. Certainly not Porsche, Ferrari or even Audi/VW bad. |

So far under warranty, I've had to have my X1's gas tank, fuel lines, and handbrake assemblies completely replaced. There were also a few smaller repairs done as well. It was all done free of charge under the 4yr/50k mile warranty, but it would have cost a few thousand dollars.
Since I bought (not leased) the car, and based on how much I drive, ~18k miles per year, I'll hit 50k miles way before 4 years is up, so I also purchased an extended 6yr/100k mile warranty. While I hope it's unnecessary, I have the suspicion it might be wise. Outside of warranty, I've had some minor bodywork done for dings and scratches, but remember that a BMW's (or any luxury car's) parts and labor will often cost more than a non-luxury marque. For instance, repairing the front bumper on the X1 cost $1200, while my mom's Camry (with similar damage) cost about $500, labor included. I've also had basic things like wheel alignments and tire rotations performed, which cost $200 at the BMW dealership but which I get done at my local specialist for about $100. In the future, oil changes should cost ~$80 every 10k miles, and there are other "recommended" services that can cost hundreds, but you just have to be savvy enough to not cave to your dealer's sweet talking (a few quick Google searches will help you out there). If you have any detailed questions about the repairs (I keep all my invoices/service authorizations as is wise) or about the extended warranty programs (I have that paperwork and the brochures too), feel free to PM me. Interesting thread. We're jumping in mid lease and the buy outs we are considering appear extremely reasonable based on the retail asking prices but you're all making me nervous.

Well...look......the bottom line is that BMWs are great cars....and I don't think anyone is saying that they are junk and fall apart. With the proper care and maintenance they will go for many years. But, being realistic, they are not going to be as reliable as a Honda or a Toyota and when they do break, they are much more expensive to fix. But, even that isn't always the case. Once the warranty is up you just need to find a good independant shop that specializes in German cars. In my town there is a great independant shop and their repairs are very reasonable. My wife kept her 3 series well beyond the warranty. Things did break but she got them fix relatively cheap....compared to what the dealer would have charged.
