So this just happened...
So there I was washing our new X1, as I do weekly using the 2 bucket method, but this time I decide to wash the windshield under the passenger side wiper without putting it in the up position, when the rubber blade gets stuck on my wash mitt and comes off and the wiper hits the windshield all in a flash. I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw that it had cracked the windshield. I was literally in a state of shock. I even had to ask the car wash guy if he could help me put the blade back on the wiper as I was rather frazzled and have never taken them off before.
You can even feel the cracks from the outside. Any advice on how I should proceed? Do you think this would be covered under the warranty or is it more of an insurance issue? I'm very careful and this just seems strange to me. |

Unfortunately I doubt it would be covered warranty, it could be an insurance claim if you wanted it to go on your insurance record and pay the deductible. Obviously make sure your deductible is less than the cost of a new windshield
I have noticed that my X1's windshield is incredibly brittle. I have had mine for 2 years now, but only 19,000 miles and mostly just local suburban driving and there are small divots all over the windshield. No cracks yet but I can tell it is just a matter of time. |

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. What an odd thing. The crack that is headed up the windshield is already growing.
I agree about the windshield being brittle, interesting that you also noticed it Dandaman184. I would have thought that windshield glass would be more resistant. Called Liberty Mutual and they said it's a $500 deductible unless Safelite can repair it. Not sure how I feel about Safelite and I seriously doubt it's repairable. I can go to any place to replace it but I was just informed that they only replace with "like, kind & quality" unless I change my policy to set up a "relationship" with BMW Finance, then it can be OEM. Know the value may decrease if I don't go OEM, but then again, I'm not sure how great OEM would be in this case. Mulling it all over...oy. Last edited by OpenRoad; 10-09-2014 at 07:41 PM.. |

So sorry to hear this OpenRoad. I'm sure I would have been completely speechless if this happened to me. Read on Safelite's website they can generall repair cracks the length of a dollar bill. I certainly wouldn't want to spent the $500, but it looks like it might be you best option.

Hate to say it, but that windshield is toast. It won't make you feel better, but in Fl, glass is covered with no deductible.

Just a suggestion, get a foam blaster from Griots, much easier than using buckets

Good news and bad news...
Good news first... There are so few X1s in the US that aftermarket companies are not producing windshields. This was the case a few months ago when mine needed replacing. I ended up with Pilkington glass...same as what they took out. Hopefully, this is still the case. The Bad news... The glass is not repairable. More bad news...maybe... A $500 deductible for Comprehensive coverage is very high, IMO. Most comp claims are for glass breakage and the high deductible reduces claims as most repairs cost less than the deductible. Comprehensive Insurance is CHEAP compared to Liability and Collision coverage. The difference in $500 deductible and $00.00 deductible is small...at least it is here in VA. Be sure to ask your Insurer about a lower deductible Comp. |

You had a rock strike and it finally decided to crack. Happens more frequently than folks might think. With our car I got in, started the motor and watched a crack appear and grow. Absolutely no signs of a chip or anything before hand. So just a coincidence that it finally cracked when the wiper hit the windshield.
