If it were based on the E84 chassis, I'd be more interested. But since it will be based off the F48, no dice. If I wanted a hot hatch, I'd buy a GTI or a Focus ST.

My Golf R was a lot of fun. But FWD bias just isn't the same, even with AWD.

How does the Golf R compare to the X1? A part of me is lamenting that I didn't wait for the Golf R Mk7 to arrive in 2015. I got the X1 because I thought the Golf R was probably too small for my needs but definitely miss having a manual. That said, after the Alpina flash, my X1 has been fun to drive and am happy with the size and the performance.

I just came from a '13 GTI w/ manual trans, and I had to have an auto. Thought about the '15 GTI, but really needed the extra room, too. Other than some odd details, the switch was a great move for me. Got AWD in the bargain, which can come in handy.

My wife has a 2012 GTI with the 6-speed DSG (automatic) transmission. When I drive her car it definitely feels like a much lighter vehicle compared to the X1 and more responsive even when driving in the non-sport mode. Handling is very good and the rear seats probably have more leg room than the X1.
The big negative of the GTI is the front wheel drive as it's too easy to lose grip when you get on the power - especially in the rain.

So I went and test drove the 2015 GTI and found that is was underwhelming in power and not as crisp in the suspension as the msport I have. I was surprised by how nice the interior was compared to my bmw, same if not better materials selection.

Well I sure hope to hell that a VW GTI feels lighter than an X1. It is, after all, like 800 lbs lighter.

It's not a hatchback at all.

Yes, but this is far from a hatchback. It's a crossover. Not quite hatch, not quite SUV. Have YOU noticed?

According to the article the Audi and Mercedes offer power outputs of 228kW/420Nm and 265kW/450Nm respectively. The X1 35i sold here in the U.S. has 224kW/406Nm. Those performance numbers aren't so far off from those vehicles that cost 10's of thousands more.

I don't see it being a crossover. Too short. A Prius 5 door was parked next to me and that was taller and longer than the X1. Do you consider that a crossover as we'll. I don't see why it isn't a hatch pretty similar in size to a Golf.

The X1 creates its own category to the growing world of larger cars and smaller SUVs, imo. Call it what you want, it has strikingly similar structural specifications to the WRX hatchback. Wheelbase, length and height are all within close range of each other. However, it doesn't really look like anything else on the road right now, until the GLA launches...

Well, BMW certainly pushed the envelope for the SAV. It takes the best of both worlds. Part hatch, part SUV. Call it whatever you want! But, whatever it is, it's still BMW brilliance.
That being said, I don't think I'm a fan of the new platform, especially not FWD. If they build the M off of the E84, I'll be happy. If not, it's gotta be a hell of a great drive for me to be sold. Otherwise, I'll just stick with this one till she dies and then buy an M3.

Golf R will be (or already is) AWD.
I don't really care. A Golf isn't a X1. Don't compare it. Compare the X1 with a Q3 and a MLA. Compare a Golf with a 1 serie, MB A, Focus RS, Opel Corsa GTS. In hot hatch land I prefer the A45AMG and maybe the M235(x)i (don't know if this last one could be in this list, same for the CLA). |

It will happen. Why? Because I already bought a X1. The good stuff always comes out after I bought the previous iteration of it. Seriously, though....I don't get the point.
