Yakima Roof Racks
Anyone have Yakima mounts and cross bars on their X1? Their web site claims no product compatibility. I found an old post on here in another thread where someone made mention of Yakima Whisper Bars but I have yet to have seen anything definitive as far as Yakima mounts being compatible with our OEM rails. Thule has their aero bars and whatnot but my current bike rack and cargo basket are Yakima.

I read that the rail grabs may work (seems like some used them on a X3??????):

Before I bought my Thule Aeroblade setup two months ago - I called Yakima and asked about fitment for the X1 - and was told they didn't have it. They said they hoped to have it by end of this summer. The Thule racks are way over-priced but seem like a good system so far. Definitely more lower profile than the BMW factory racks.

I have the black rails and thus purchased the black Thule Aeroblades and there is no interference with the Panoramic sunroof.
The tilting/retracting glass section is too low, or the crossbars are high enough that they will never collide. Although I only had the car about 5 weeks before installing them, I have not noticed any appreciable added noise or decreased MPG. Pricey?... OK, but the quality is there. Buy with confidence that there will be no mechanical issues. |

I test fit a set on ours, but just encountered an issue with my properly fit Q Towers sliding on my other car, an issue I never had with my previous Thule setup. I will likely never use Yakima again.

Stopped by REI on the way home from work Wed and picked up the Aeroblade Edge kits. They're 20% off and I had a dividend from last year. They didn't have the fit kit for our car, though. When they checked the system, the only store that had it was 1.5hrs away and they had 1. Oddly, she said their system didn't show any inventory in the whole state and none had it on order. I had to order some stuff off Amazon so I checked and they had it (prime eligible, too!) so I just ordered it there. REI's webpage doesn't list the fit kit either (4013) but it still shows up on Thule's website so I'm not sure what the deal is. There is no indication of a replacement for it on the Thule website.

What is the issue with the BMW crossbars? Is the bulkiness what people don't like? I bought them when I got the car and I have my Yakima bike rack on that with no problem.

I ended up buying the BMW bars which are a great fit. I called Yakima, and they do not have a fit at this time. They usually do not come out with one unless it is "bombproof"!
I ended up buying a Yakima rack and roll trailer which is way nicer than having the drag on the roof, so I will probably use it more than the BMW racks. |
