Speedometer reads high
I've had my X1 about a month now and I've been suspecting that it reads high. i commute on a freeway and the speed readings seem significantly higher than in my two previous cars (a Prius and an A3). Since I doubt that everyone else started driving faster, I suspected the speedometer on the X1.
I did a test with my Garmin GPS. With my other cars, the Garmin speed matched the car's speedometer within 1 mph. I was able to find a stretch of road where I could keep a nice steady 70 mph on the X1's speedometer. The Garmin read 66 mph. Anyone else have this problem? Can a dealer confirm this problem and/or can they fix it? Thanks, Cliff

All BMWs have this issue. They just read slightly fast. No big deal, and nothing you can really do the fix it. Look on YouTube for the Car And Driver review of the X1. He mentioned it in that video.
Better showing too fast than too slow. At least you won't be stopped for speeding by accident. |

The speedometer doesn't have to be accurate, but the odometer does. You will of course get better gas mileage if you think you're cruising at 70 mph but in actuality are only doing 66.

Aren't both the speedometer and the odometer readings based on the same things, the wheel rotation and tire diameter?

It gives me corrected MPH, coolant temp, voltage, and average mpg. The odometer and the tach are dead on, but those other numbers like miles to go on tank, and mpg (25.5) don't correlate to anything I understand. I think the 25.5 might be total mpg for the 5500 miles I've owned car, but my Scanguage gives me tank mpg, and reset average mpg for a condition that I can check to improve mpg. |

I've calculated my fuel mileage and it's typically higher than what the computer tells me it is

I need to know tank or short average mpg so I can test speed vs mpg, etc. There may be a way to reset the mpg, but all the data there is irrelevant to my use. I know the od is accurate so I just divide the gallons filled to the trip od, then, clear trip od for next fillup. |

That is the raw data, from there it gets modified by an ECM. You can recode your car to change tire diameters and also change the readout on your speedometer if you want to... It is data manipulation. AFAIW, the odometer is accurate

When this was brought up on the BMW K1200LT forum. Someone said that part of the reason is the consumer laws in some countries. If they were to read slower then your speed and you got a ticket they might be responsible.

I have coded the option to show true speed on the cluster. I haven't played with the different tire diameters option yet to adjust the analog speedometer readout.

Wen you code this, where is the true speed displayed? In one of the little displays between the speedo and tach? If so, is it always displayed or can you toggle the display to something else?

The P3 gauge (available for some of the BMW models) shows, amongst other things, actual speed. The car's gauge is very optimistic.
When I'd finished with the oem tires on our 135i, I upgraded a little in size (215/245 stock to 225/255, with same sidewall ratio) and have decreased the optimistic speedo / odo readings, as compared with my Garmin. I will be doing the same with my 1M when its stock tires are done this coming summer.

I set it to show true speed. See the attachment where it appears. You can still toggle to display different things.

You need a D+KCAN or ICOM cable. The procedures for setting everything up is well explained at the e90 coding forum. I tried to list most of the options here: http://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/showp...8&postcount=23

I've seen this on a number of cars. The speedo reads slightly higher than actually speed. My MCS does this and most of the rentals I've had while TDY do the same.
